Is there any room for serious improvement in the world of shotguns?

IMO there are two catagories, home defense/law enforcement and hunting. It's hard to think there could be much improvment over Berrettas and Benellis offerings for hunting and Keltech's KSG is a very inovative bullpup but it has room for some improvment in the HD catagory.

A reliable box fed semi-auto bull pup shot gun would be great - I'm thinking something like a 12ga Tavor.

Yes, give us these things. Also, a beautiful semi auto. Something to bridge the gap between a Tupperware gas gun and a swanky o/u. The benelli ethos is a step in the right direction. Now make it heavier and cheaper.

Agreed. I'd also like to see shotgun manufacturers get the idea that "beautiful" doesn't necessarily mean "more baroque than the palace of Versailles." I want a shotgun where styling was a deliberate consideration (I love my Browning BPS, but it has about as much thought behind its styling as a crowbar does), but I don't want a shotgun with some bas-relief scene on the receiver of a guy with his dog in a field. Instead, I want something that's styled in the way that modern motor vehicles and modern electronics are styled. The Benelli Ethos is about the only example I can think of that actually tries to do that.

I'd add a third category: General purpose/utility. It's the kind of gun that will work for everything; personal defense, pest control, all manner of hunting, and just blasting targets for fun.

In my opinion, there are very few guns that fill this role adequately. Yes, a short barreled HD gun can kill game, but the lack of choke tubes typical of such models is a handicap. Long barrel sporting guns can be used for HD, but the length makes them ungainly indoors.

What I would like to see are more guns that have a barrel of around 20" threaded for choke tubes that come optic-ready from the factory. None of that will revolutionize the world of shotguns, It's just an option I'd like to see more often.

Maybe you already know about it, but if you do not, the Winchester SXP Marine Defender seems to offer exactly what you mention. Yes, I know it is stainless, but still, it seems to fit your needs.

The FNH P-12 and the Benelli M2 tactical also fit the bill. That SXP looks pretty cool, but the ultra-low price is a little of concern. I'm certainly no cork sniffer when it comes to shotguns, but once things drop below a MSRP of $500 or so, I get a little suspicious.

I prefer a utility gun just as you discibe . I Like a fixed choke for this application modified works well . Being a lefty I have a left handed 870 , I had Steve Rose of Rose Action sports cut it to 18.5 and rethread it for chokes and remount the bead . this was close to what I had in mind for a utility gun . what it didn't have was the ability to add the multitude of barrels made, and I wanted more weather resistant finish . (Remington only makes 1 left handed barrel ) I also am not big on a vent rib for a beat around gun
I now have my idea utility gun built by a forum member AIP tactical. I started with his basic I model which has all his upgrades added a modified choke barrel left safety
Parkerizing and synthetic stock gives me the weather resistance I want , it is short and handy holds enough #6's shells that I can load it and not worry about extra shells (we have no mag limit for small game) Shoots buck shot well and is minute of coyote out at 50 yards with slugs a little farther for deer I has everything I want yet is simple with no gizmos to get in the way

Then you'd better add a fourth, and one of the ones most responsible for the sale of ammo - the target gun - which, it seems, I am in the minority here. I have more target guns than any other. There are target guns that are VERY mission specific and that can get VERY expensive - look up Ljutic, Silver Seitz and others

I believe in the movie "Aliens", set way in the future, there's a scene where the soldiers are told not to use their ultra-modern "pulse rifles" and one of them pulls out what appears to be a 12 ga pump shotgun, maybe an 870. Looks like those guys did not anticipate much development left for the shotgun.
That was an Ithaca Model 37, cool guns!

I'm sure they're incredible guns, but there's little reason for most of us to spend that kind of money, unless we're going to take up seriously competing in clays games. Such a gun would honestly be wasted on me.

Kind of like owning a Lamborghini if you live on a dirt road that washes out every spring.

The only thing I'd like is an improvement in choke tube operation.

I have 30 different shotguns, about 20 that take tubes.

How about a really great adjustable choke or an adapter so I can use one type of choke tube that screws on the outside of the barrel.

A 12 gauge semi-auto DESIGNED to shoot specific 1 1/2" shell (get rid of the wad column, but keep the cup). For the shells, load it with powder that would still give you the 1200 fps using #1 Buck. Design the chamber to stand that pressure. The mag tube would hold maybe 8 or 9 rounds. Stock would need a mercury recoil reduction system. Pistol grip.

Awesome HD gun. Or at least to play with!

Buckshot that performs well in a rifled barrel would be a good innovation. I think something like a dual cup, one to engage the rifling and one to float inside it would be good enough, there may need to be some kind of paraffin lube, something that would melt and become fluid under pressure, but would not leak out during storage.

It's not expensive, but I have a Browning BPS that I've set up for, and use almost exclusively for, single trap. Switching to a Monte Carlo stock with a longer length of pull definitely improved its ability to break rising birds, even though combined with the 28" barrel, it's nearly too tall for my safe...

I also have a soft spot in my heart for the BT-99...my club has a loaner gun, it was the first gun I ever shot trap with, and the best gun I ever shot trap with. Utterly useless for anything besides single trap, it's amazing for that one particular application.

Never said they HAD to be expensive. many a trap shoot "back in the day" was won with a model 12. Today, though, some folks are willing to spend upwards of $15K for one of the semi to custom jobs

How about a red dot scope that picks up the clay target, computes distance, speed, and trajectory.
Just place the red dot on the target and pull the trigger.

Or better still pull the trigger and when target is acquired gun fires.

A counter recoil system like in the large field cannons, hydraulic buffers that take up all recoil energy.

Get rid of the plastic stocks made today and replace with stronger, lighter carbon fiber.

Titanium barrels, receivers, and lock parts making bigger guns lighter.

LOL Sounds dangerous.

If they can figure out a way to circumvent the laws of physics like that, there are a lot more important uses than shotguns! :)
But seriously, the AA12 does seem to recoil less in full auto mode than in semi-auto. Watch this at about 2:00 and at about 3:10.
