Is there such a thing as a good budget .50 BMG rifle?

PSA is selling .50 for $1.80 a round, better hit it before the arfcom guys buy it up! This stuff is selling at unheard of prices!

...and apparently reports of case failures with certain brass, over at barfcom (which I would assume means there is literally no design safer, given their track record for accuracy :D)

No case failures, there was questions about the SH chamber and sticking brass. SH posted that they have taken steps to run a finishing reamer in the chamber to cut down on this.

Sticking brass isn't a issue, unless it's every piece that's fired. I get them from time to time even with my reloads. It's also why my cleaning rod is 5 feet long, just takes a light tap and the brass drops out.

Taliv: Why wouldn't you buy another Serbu 50-BFG? I've been looking at them lately.

Anyone know what ever happened to Serbu's Typhoon 20mm Vulcan single shot? He had indicated years ago they were ready to go into production but they never came to market.

Dan

Mark's been to busy building and selling BFG's and BFG-50A1 semi's. I'm sure one day he'll get the 20mm on the market, it'll be another "two weeks"!

BFG's are great entry level .50's, I'd buy one but I want mine in 50BMG not 50DTC. Maybe when I retire and move out of CA.

A 20mm would be a Destructive Device unless the ATF made an exception, right?

The ammo would be If it was anything but training ammo.

Check out Anzio Iron Works, they sell a single shot and repeater in 20mm. They sell for the price of a small car! That and they're about 7 feet long put together.

customer service experience. a good bit of time has passed though, so maybe your experience will be better

as far as safety, i think the bfg design is solid and pretty trustworthy.

the anzio 20mm stuff is fun. i have a friend who owns some of their stuff. pretty cool. only downside is it would take up so much space in my house it's not worth it! and as with most crew served weapons, you'll want to bring a few friends to the range to help you carry it. on the positive side, pretty much everybody will want to come to the range with you to watch you shoot it. well, actually there is one more downside and that's finding a range where you can use it.

I just looked at the bylaws for my range and it's silent on limiting the size of the weapon. Probably because they didn't think about it. I bet that would change the day after you sent some 20mm down range. If we're going there, how about a 90mm recoiless rifle

Just took a look at the Serbu. Very interesting. The only downside is the carbine weights 17 lb before bipod and scope. It is still manageable, but I think it is getting on the heavy side of things for a deer rifle. :)

I guess I could use it only for moose, where I would not walk and stalk, but wait in a blind or ride in the back of a pick up truck. I would most likely be giving up some speed with the 22" barrel.

Do you think it would still be an effective choice for shots within 400 yards? Will I be able to see a blood trail? :D

Just to see the face of the game warden, I think it would be worth the price of the rifle. Someday...

I thought anything over .50 caliber was a destructive device by default unless the ATF grants an exception.

You would have to ask Anzio but I'm pretty sure they got an exemption for their rifles. Then it comes down to the state you live in also, better check to see if you can own one.

Even if I could afford one... CA won't let us have them! Who would've thought that the most gun friendly state in the union would say no?!

And for those of you not paying attention... PSA has federal ammo on sale again!

What type of accuracy can one expect from this Federal FMJ ammo. My 750gr Amax load has spoiled with it's 1moa or less accuracy though it's pricey.

I suppose one could pull the bullet and dump the powder and get a a primed case for a buck eighty.:)

Depends or yes and no. There are things out there that launch projectiles larger than .50 that are not destructive devices.

Take the 50 BMG for example, it uses .510" diameter bullets, or a 4 bore thats 1.053" or even 12 or 20 ga slugs. Then there are cannons and mortars as well, you can own without paying for a stamp.

Yes the real 20mm Vulcan is considered a DD. The one with the exemption is the .950 JDJ. I guess they got a "sporting use exemption" for that cartridge.

The Anzio single shot is $9800 so paying the $200 tax isn't a big deal if you can afford a rifle like that. The Serbu Cyclone was built like their .50 bmg so I was hoping it would come out to under $4000. The youtube videos of it got my hopes up a couple years ago but it hasn't materialized as of yet.

Anyone want to put together a group buy on Serbu single shots? It seems the consensus here is that they are well built. Maybye if we can get together a dozen people here on THR we can get a discount.

Dan

There was just a group buy on BFG's on arfcom or snipers hide. I think they got them for $1,800, don't quote me but I think they had over 100 people.

I still have my semi auto BFG receiver that I need to save up for so I can get it done.
