the number of people permitted to carry concealed weapons in Utah has risen from about 15,000 to nearly 57,000. Of those, about 1,000 have lost their license - in many cases for violent crime, including sexual assault and murder

This is from the following article on the Christian Science Monitor website: http://www.csmonitor.com/2003/0729/p01s02-uspo.html

I was under the belief that very few CCWs are revoked anywhere- but in Utah nearly 2% have? How many of these were for committing violent felonies? The article says "in many cases" which could mean 20.

Anyone know what the facts are?

It's because Utah runs a background check on these people on a daily basis. If something gets flagged, the license is automatically revoked. However, there isn't any figures on false positives where the licenses were made valid again.

DAILY CHECKS............

Lonnie:

I just received my Utah Permit (PA resident by the way) and inquired both the Utah BCI and my local instructor on this point. The BCI receives national criminal reports; this list is cross-checked against the list of UTAH Permit holders - matching offenders are then revoked.

Just wanted to make a point that permit holders are not themselves background checked on a daily basis.

Now with PA and UTAH permits I'm good to go in about 22 states.......

Often for murder or violent crimes?

Absolute BS. I have heard of 2 people who lost their permits due to violent crime. (assaults) Most of the people I'm aware of who lost their permits were due to stupid little things or being identified wrongly during the routine background checks. I've never heard the number as being that high.

I've never heard the 1000 number thrown around, nor have I heard about large numbers of CCW holders doing anything bad. I'm sure if it were true it would be plastered all over the Tribune daily.

I think we've just located the problem: the same old, tired old leftist extremist lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, and plain old-fashioned fraud.

Well, as to the numbers of revocations, all you have to do is check the Utah BCI (Bureau of Criminal Investigation) website, they've got it there. There's nothing there (last time I checked) about re-instated permits. And there's nothing there telling you if the assault, etc., was committed with a firearm, either, IIRC. The vast majority are for DUI.

Bottom line is, there's three kinds of lies:

Bold face lies (sometimes called "damn lies"), little white lies (or just plain lies), and statistics.
