This is a followup to my question earlier about an Ishapore Enfield...

Who has one and how does it shoot? How does the sight picture work for you? Cheek weld?

Mine goes bang every time but shoots about 2 feet to the left. :D Kicks pretty good, too.

sight picture is crappy... notch rear and post front. I much prefer peep sights on rifles. Cheek weld... ummm.......

Hmmmm.

I got an ishy 2a in 7.62 and it shoots good. Not exactly a sniper rifle but fits more in the surplus with irons category. The 7.62 rifles usually have very good barrels. I haven't owned or shot an Indian No 4 so I can't comment on them. The 2as though are a good buy and usually cheaper to shoot than 303.

I have had one for quite a few years now. I just shot it a couple of weeks ago after not shooting it for a couple of years, and forgot how good it does shoot. The rear sight noch is a little small but the big mag is nice on a bolt gun. I allways thought it was 10 rounds but it really is 12, who knew? I much prefer the look of the #4 Enfeild rather than the full wood to the muzzle. I paid $125 and you don't see them much any more.

Cheek weld--not so good. Sights are a little high for a good weld.

Sights are decent as far as notch & post goes. Better than a Mauser, or an AK. Long sight radius and relatively fine front post makes for some pretty decent precision.

I shoot mine at 200 yards all the time. If I can see the target, I can get hits.

1Kperday,
Two feet off is REALLY off. Have you had the sight guard off? There is alot of room to move that front sight blade. At 100 yards, a little sight shift moves the point-of-impact a long way.

Mine's an A2, with the older sites for the .303 ammo. The sites are small, but very serviceable, even with my 61 year-old eyes. At 100 yds., it's "minute of paper plate" or better, if I work at it. The sights have plenty of adjustment, even the front; just loosen and move -- a little actually goes a long way.
Good luck, they are fun shooters.:D

Just started shooting lead bullets in my Ishapore. Dropped the velocities down like the Cowboy Action Shooters do. I'm hitting the 100 yard gong at the gun club offhand - so I'm very pleased with the accuracy. I have to use the 400 yard setting with the lead bullets. Its a great gun and virtually no recoil with the lead bullets. I'm coming to appreciate that more as I get older. I simply couldn't stand the pounding of a 100 full power loads.

Been a while since the last time I went out with my Ishy 2a (NATO .308). Never put it "on paper" at the longer ranges, but i never had any trouble bouncing junk (plastic jugs) at 200 yards by aiming to hit under their base. I was standing & shooting offhand, using 30 year old ammo. Sights worked just fine for me set for 200. Only issue I ran into was getting the magazine lips adjusted properly for consistent feeding, ran into occassional FTF before they were right.

Had a 'smith check it out on delivery before doing any shooting. Headspace was good, chamber & barrel looked virtually unused. Exterior was a bit dinged, but looked to be storage wear more so than use wear.

I haven't shot mine in a while, but it was on right/left pretty good when I got it. I shoots a bit high, but I can live with that. I really like the bolt action with the large mag.

I own two 2A's that shoot where I want them to go out to 250 yards. My son prefers them to my M1A and Garand as far as recoil. He also likes to shoot the 2A more than my AR. It is a fun rifle to shoot, clean and just handle. As others have said there is a lot of adjustment possible in those sights if you are patient.

i have 2 Ishapores, 1 stock, and 1 highly modified.

The stock one shoots just fine, I paid extra for a nearly mint gun.

The other is very customized, with a "Scout" scope and folding stock.
It shoots very well.

Personally, I like my Ishapore 2A-1 just fine. While the exterior showed a good deal of handling/storage wear, the bore and chamber were immaculate. I paid just under $125 for it in 85-90% condition a few years back. With a new wave of 2A/A1 imports supposed to be coming, it shouldn't be hard to find a nice one for the same kind of money.

While the military open irons aren't too spiffy, especially now that I wear bifocals, it shoots at least as well as I can hold for with decent commercial or surplus ammo. I had only minmal adjustment to make to get it shooting to POA for my eyes with surplus NATO ball. While I haven't been able to duplicate them personally, I've witnessed several sub 2" 5-shot groups shot with it at 100M by a better rifleman than I using Venezuelan surplus ball and a couple averaging an astounding 1 1/4" with '76 LC Match. Enough to make me start looking into a no-drill scope mount for it.

Just got the March issue of "Guns" magazine. Holt Bodinson's "Surplus Locker" column discusses the 2A-2A-1 in detail. Should be available on their website soon, if not already. Good info.

I have a 1965 Ishapore 2A. It shoots dead on at 100 meters and I am obtaining consistant 3 inch groups using de-linked 7.62 ammo. Considering the sights it is an OK rifle. I bought it about 4 years ago for $100. I wonder if a regular 1907 model Enfield bayonet fits these?

Richard/SIA,

Please tell us more about that folding stocked Ishy. Is that a FAL stock? I looked at those a long time ago when Clinton Coates talked about them, but they were so high after the import ban I never moved on it.

Bayonet

The 1907 pattern bayonet is correct for the Ishy. It's 22.5" long, of that about 17" is cold steel.:what: Mine was issued in 1915 and made by Wilkinson Sword. It has obviously been used. When I received it it was thick with cosmo, but it cleaned-up great and was still very, very sharp.
Oh, and it looks really cool mounted on the Ishy!:D

Detachment Charlie,

I've got large bayonet like you said, made by remington that wont fit on my Ishapore, which is what I bought it for. You're saying an 1907 will work?
