You guys are right. I stand corrected. All my comments are out of line, shallow and inappropriate and not representative of this awesome forum.
No, you're being a bit sensitive. Your basic connection with the AK to nearly all that has been bad for the past many decades is a sound one and your personal sentiment is absolutely justified.

It's just that there may be some other aspects and users of the design you are overlooking.

Me? I'm rabidly anti Chi-Com while pro ROC-Taiwan. The only way I can stomach the Chinese SKS I have is that it was a righteous "bring-back" from that war.

I doubt anyone would take a reasonably thought out stand against your general point of view.

No worries.

Todd.

There's a bullet train from five miles from my house straight to St.Petersburg Russia, but I've never been to Russia (for a number of reasons). If getting out actually means something like that over there, I might have to get a visa into my passport after all. Even though my wife won't like the idea at all... :D

Nah. I kind-of like AK:s, even without the current imagery of what Russia could be if mr. Putin finally could be bothered to pull his head out of his a..
I know. Totally off topic but if you can take a trip over to St Petersburg. It is an absolutely beautiful city. Seriously, the sidewalks are like a supermodel runway. I remember going down the escalator into the underground once and my eyes caught a stunning young devotchka . Our eyes met and she gave me a little smile and then my wifes purse cracked me on the back of the head. Amazing architecture, museums etc. Nothing at all what you'd imagine Russia to be like. Well worth the trip especially if the trip is just a 2 hour train ride.

This might be digression of epic proportions, but...

Thanks for the tip. I have mixed feelings about the whole country; I've been trained as a logistics officer (and my son is currently in recon), my uncle was shot down over Karelia during WW2 returning from a bombing mission and my father hated the russians deeply. Even though he did quite a lot of business with Soviet Union between 50's and 80's. I'm the only generation in our family who doesn't speak russian (7 other languages, yes, but no russian). I love Estonia, Hungary and a number of other countries that used to be behind the iron curtain, but it'll be a big step for me to book tickets on that train and spend even a weekend in St.Petersburg.

I'm well aware of what the city is like these days. Not that far from its glory days during the Czar rule. But still... I can't really trust Russia as a state. There's little guarantee I'll really be safe, with my background as VP of NRA Finland, military reserve, and not keeping my mouth shut whenever something has gone terribly wrong in the country. Whether my slight paranoia is healthy and justified or not remains to be seen and I'm not exactly eager to find out for myself.

I understand. My wife is a St Petersburg native and I couldnt get her to go to Germany if my life depended on it which is a shame as I lived there for years and know some great places there.

I don't think the rifle is ugly at all. The upgrades look good to me. I'd like to try one but not sure I'd buy one. Just a guess but MSRP might make this too rich for my blood.

I'll look at it if there is a 5.56 variant. I'm NOT buying another set of dies for 7.62.

Of course, I said the same thing about 5.56, and .38 spcl, and .380 and...

And I really wish they'd come up with something other than the curved mags.

From comments on the article:

It looks like they mashed an ARX, ak, and a magpul zhukov stock all together and made this

I agree that I don't think it looks that good, but as stated earlier I'm starting to look more at sights, trigger, etc. I reckon it'd get the job done and wouldn't turn my nose one up at one.

It's probably a fine rifle, but I like my AKs old school. To me, there's nothing like a sexy Hungarian blonde or a hot Russian red. The wood furniture, I mean

Not really an AK guy, but the wood has big appeal to me. This rifle doesn't have any.

I like the look of a Model 94, a Model 21 Winchester, Model 70 Winchester...you get the idea. When the M16 came out, the looks had no appeal to me. Might be a good gun. Might be exactly what is needed on the battlefield but looks? Nope. I do not like the look of "tactical" guns. Like the difference between a Lambo and a Yugo to me. But, alas everyone has a different point of view.

Or the difference between a model T and a Formula one race car depending on perspective.

We are out there .... When the time comes to defend our Red White and Blue Freedom....7.62x39 this is what will be by my side

I Like It.
The only bit that looks a bit "iffy" is the overwrought pistol grip. In my opinion a simple nub to attach an AR style grip would have looked and worked much better.

AK-Alfa-detail.jpg

It you squint a little you can almost see the joint lines from where they molded in this AR-style grip.

When you look at the ARX-180, the SCAR, the G36 / XM8, and almost all new military type carbine designs that aren't AR-15s, or bullpups, I think it's hard to justify calling any one of them uglier than any of the others.
Yep, they are all looking alike these days.

First let me say that I have never been a fan, or owner of the AK platform. I have shot AK's that friends have owned. Other than the reliability factor, they just never struck a chord with me. But with that being said, personally, I like this new incarnation. I think it's a long over due upgrade to an antiquated platform. I would though, be curious to see, if there has been any quantifiable increase in accuracy with the new design. I'm sure that the increase in sight radius will have an effect, which is one of the changes that I like. One thing that I think they might consider would be to chamber it in 5.56, and make the lower capable of accepting AR magazines. If they were to incorporate those changes, I think they would have a huge seller on their hands. But again, I'm no expert.

To answer the OP's question; In my opinion, no. I still like Marc Krebs' designs better, but that is a well-thought out modernization of the AK platform. I really like the safety.
