So, I took my friend Shannon to the range today. She had never shot before and looked interested when I told her what I was going to be doing this weekend.
I invited her to come along (in true John Ross style). I didn't have a .22 so she was going to have to shoot my only pistol (a G22 in .40). As per Pax, I went over basic safety rules and how to drop the mag and lock open the action at her place before the range. After that I had her go over the 4 rules again, and when I was satisfied we jumped in the car and headed down to the range.
I loaded up a few round and went over grip and stance again at the range and then shot a few rounds just so that she would be aware of what it would look/sound like.
Then I gave her a mag with two rounds in it and she stepped up to the table. Her first few shots were good. she got them on the paper (which is all you can ask for on the first day!). We traded on and off for a while and each time she was up I would check her weak side quickly, looking for finger and thumb placement and then I would stand on the strong side and keep and eye on that trigger finger. That seemed to be the biggest problem area, but even so, it wasn't that bad. maybe had to remind her 4 times, which is less than I was reminded my first time.
After a while it wasn't surprising to see her hitting bullseyes every other shot. Girls really do learn quicker than guys.
All in all, it was a good safe time and she had a blast. she wants to go back next time I go.
AND....
She bought me lunch and coffee afterwards because she enjoyed it so much
I think I gotta keep this friendship going!
