... Many I'm starting to feel itchy...
Usually I'm pretty sure of the things I want... But this time I'd like some comments from the peanut gallery!.. I'm thinking about picking up a hand cannon. As it stands I have no practical use for it aside from range fun, this is okay because range fun is... fun... anyways... I'm thinking about getting a 500SW or a 454 casull. Anyone with real world experience with these things care to weigh in?

Nothing wrong with range fun...

If I were to buy a very big bore revolver it would be a .460 S&W Magnum. You mentioned the 454 Casull, the .460 Magnum will shoot the 454 Casull, the 45 Colt, the 45 Schofield and of course the .460 Magnum rounds. What can be more fun than being able to shoot all those different power level rounds? Add the fact if you do decide to use the gun for hunting you give up very little to the 500 Magnum and only in bullet weight, not velocity.

Just be aware, the X frame revolver is VERY big!

I'd get a .460 Magnum.

That way you also get a .454 Casull, AND a .45 Colt firearm as well. .500 is cool but it doesn't have near the versatility of the .460 IMHO.

Just something to chew on about. :)

Why yes, yes I do. The 460V is a superb combination of high velocity, medium range accuracy, sitting in a nicely balanced X Frame. It isn't so muzzle heavy that it is hard to hold, and in a moment of real need, you can bring the sights up and get them on target really fast. Yet, it still soaks up recoil nicely. The only down side is that you do lose some velocity as the original barrel length that the 460 was designed for was 8 3/8". The resulting fireball from a shorter barrel is substantial. Though that is neither good or bad. It just is.

This one is hand polished with Mother's Mag Polish. I intend to put wood grips on it in the future.

Yes it is. I carry mine on the hip in a Desantes Hip Holster with a thumb strap when in Grizz country. I had to invest in suspenders to keep my pants up. This model comes in a bit under 4 lbs I believe. Anyone thinking about buying an X Frame should definitely handle one first, as they are not really for everyone. One thing to note though. S&W put the L frame grip size on these guns in order to accommodate as many folks as possible, so if an L frame sized grip suits you, so will this grip. The weight is the real killer for many people.

xxjumbojimboxx,
Of course only you can decide which of the 460 Magnums are best for you but since you are looking for a range gun there really is no need for an 8"+ barrel unless you're hunting. I think the 5" 460V recommended by 460Kodiak would probably be a good choice for what you are looking for.

460Kodiak,
Have you ever seen the Chesty Puller conversion set of straps made by Simply Rugged? It turns your holster into an across the chest rig which removes the weight from your belt and makes the gun quicker to deploy if Grizz decides you look like tonight's dinner! http://shop.simplyrugged.com/ecommerce/Chesty-Puller-Conversion-System.cfm?item_id=160&parent=672
That's a really nice looking 460V you have. I like it...

I told myself don't open this post. Now I have another firearm to add to the list. I like guns I can use multiple cartridges out of and I already have 45 Colt.

Thanks. I think S&W really hit a home run with this version of the 460. I've always liked the 6.5" 500 magnum too, but have no need for one.

I have considered that system from Simply Rugged, and also a similar system from Diamond D Leather. They do look useful, but for my particular recreation I don't care for them. I am an avid hiker and regularly put on 10-15 miles on each excursion. I carry a light day pack that has everything I need to survive for 48 hours in the bush should anything go wrong. While light, it still weighs 20 pounds, and thus utilizes chest straps to keep it in place. So I don't want to add more bulk to my chest on top of it.

I also tend to really push myself on steep and rough terrain and sweat like a hog while doing so. Even in a good holster, I'd be dripping sweat all over my gun, all day.

I also tend to go off trail fairly often on rock ridge tops. I don't use climbing gear, just boots and gloves, but I do find myself crawling on my chest and stomach fairly often across bare rock. (Eventually I'll go missing because my friends aren't really into it and I'm usually alone.). So when it all comes down to it, I find carrying low on my hip to be the best carry method for my particular activities.

The suspenders help a lot. The weight doesn't bother me as I'm a large framed fellow, but my pants getting dragged down would drive me bonkers without the suspenders.

I think a chest rig would fantastic for hunting in cooler weather or fly fishing since it would keep the gun out of the water.
