I have been looking at slug barrels and also slug guns (since buying a new barrel for either of my shotguns would cost almost as much as I paid for them). Anyway, today I saw an Ithaca 37 20 gauge Deerslayer (used). I think it is one of the guns from the iteration that folded back in April 2005.

The gun has what looks to be a 22"-24" barrel, which I was suprised to find was fully free floating. There is a hole for what looks to be a sling stud on the underside of the barrel. It has plastic furniture (yuck), and is parkerized grey. Drilled and tapped for a scope mount, with fiber-optic rifle sights. It generally appears a bit "tacticool," although this gun has a standard length magazine.

Looks fairly new (although it has been sitting on the shelf for at least a year), not really any marks that I could see, although the barrel did not appear to have been cleaned since the gun was last fired  .

My two questions are:

How hard would wood furniture be to aquire, and would it fit this gun?

How is $179 for the price?

Whatta ya waiting for- somebody to PAY YOU to take it? A functioning M37 at that price in any configuration is a steal. Forget the furniture, use the $$$ to buy ammo and shoot the sucker.

I don't like the look of those "tactical" Ithaca shotguns. I much prefer the traditional wood/blueing models.

But ... for $179 I would buy it without a second thought.

My mistake, the gun actually is rifled.

Anyway, I decided against it. At closer inspection there are a bunch of scratches on the gun, which my eye glanced over due to the parkerizing. The scope mount holes are also missing their screws. Finally, it looks like someone tried to disassemble the gun without the proper screw-driver as the screwheads are a bit buggered, although not too badly.

This is just my personal quirk, but I will drive myself mad buying a gun with finish damage on it. If I put it there myself, no problem. I learned when I bought my Auto-5 that had some pitting that the previous owner's actions will drive me nuts. Plus synthetic stocks do nothing for my tastes.

Flipping a coin about a dozen times and not once being able to call the side it was going to land on probably was a sign.

If anyone else is interested, the gun is at the Gander Mountain in Geneva Illinois. It is on the rack with the overflow of used shotguns in the rifle section of the firearms department. If you want a screaming deal on an Ithaca 37 Deerslayer and don't mind some cosmetic flaws go get it!
