What a hunting year it's been. Two trips to africa, tons of hogs, a first day double on elk and a great finish with both species of north Texas deer. I got this Muley Last week.

I had been hunting for several days and had passed up several good bucks. I had bedded several does the day before and went back early the next day into the canyon complex where they had gone for the night.

As soon as I entered the draws leading to the canyon I saw a group of three does and a little further two more broke out in front of me. As the trailing doe crested the draw she stopped and looked back into the bottom of the draw. I knew then that since it was rut she was looking back at either another doe or Mr. lover boy. I popped the scope covers and brought my R-93 Blazer in .300Weatherby to port arms.

Turns out it was Mr. right he broke cover at a run and I ran to the next ridge when I crested he was just about to skyline when he did the fatal mule deer stop and look back trick before disappearing. That was the only break I needed and sent a 180gr Sirroco the 218 yds into his vitals. The deer bucked at the shot and went over the hill but the game was up and he pilied up a short time later. I love these big symetrical 3X3's.

I really like these sirroco bullets they group tight and they are stout enough to hold together and not do to much meat damage out of this thermo nuclear .30. A very well built bullet.

The next morning I was driving aroud not really hunting just kind of goofing off. We had stopped the truck and were getting some sandwhichs out of the cooler when my buddy looked at me with saucer eyes and said "did you just see that goldurn buck" (edited for family viewing). At first I just gave him a look as we are always messing with each other. About the time he started foaming at the mouth and his head spun aropund I guessed he may just be serious so I dropped my sandwhich in the dirt and grabbed a rifle.

I still hadn't seen the deer. He had pulled a whitetail on us and vaporized into thin air. So we jumped in the truck and drove around the point of the hill he'd dissapeared into. And sure enough there he was standing there at about 60 yards.

I jumped out of the truck leaned over the hood put the Cross wire dead center squeazed the trigger on one of the easiest deer shots of my life and can you guess what happened? Yep that's right I missed him clean!!!! Don't ask me just one of those things........;)

In any case the deer bolted and went about 100 yards and pulled up short to find his does. I didn't miss the second time and he dropped in about 30 feet. in the picture you can see the exit wound. I really do like these bullets!

In cloesing I'll just say that while this deer isn't a monster for Texas standards he's a nice whitetail for this area. In fact very few White tail are taken in the area I was hunting it's primarily a muledeer area so I was quite pleased with him.........:)

Very nice bucks. My deer hunting season ended with the entire family getting the flu :barf: . Couldnt even go today the last day of the season. Well there is always next year :) .

300 Weatherby = stout medicine.

I've always wanted a target rifle in that caliber or 300 Winchester

Did you take that rifle to Africa??

I'd like to hunt cape buff with that caliber or maybe in 378.

12-34hom.

I've never used a .300weatherby in Africa. I do however, have friends who have. With the proper loads and bullets it's a fantastic african plains game cartridge. It is however illegal to use for dangerous game in Africa. Most if not all countries have a .375 diameter limit for dangerous game. And if you read the regs they actually state that the rifle must be equal to or greater in power to the .375H&H.

The .378 would be a fantastic choice for buffalo however. And despite the rules a .300 with 220gr solids would be a sufficient medicine on buff in open country. I wouldn't want to play with this combo in the grass however.

:) :)

Good hunting .

So would you go with a double rifle in 40 caliber for hunting in grass type vegitation or something heavier??

I have read many books about hunting Africa and the guns used.

John Taylors books are excellent fare. I see he used a couple of short Mausers on some of his travels.

To be a white hunter in Equatorial East Africa in the 1900 -1930 area, would be something to behold.

In the tall grass or the the thick Jess I use a .458Lott bolt action Mod 70 with ghost ring sights and use a .500gr Woodliegh solid on Buff. I have also recently aquired a .470 Nitro Double box Lock ejector gun. In the true tall grass the double always has been and always will be the best choice.

I personally recomend a .458 or larger firing a .500 gr bullet at around 2100fps but not to exceed 2400fps in a fast handling and properly fitting platform. This recomendation is for hunting dangerous thick skinned game in tight cover.

I use simulary set up .375H&H for all other plains game while hunting in dangerous game territory. The .375 is a great rifle and can be used quite effectivley on thick skinned dangerous game as well. The only difference is that I use a scope on the .375. You never know when the extra punch a .375 offers over a .30 may come in handy. I.E. an unexpected encounter with an elephant while chasing impala. Oh yes it happens.

I do not recomend that you go out and buy a heavy and take it to Africa with out plenty of practice with it first. It takes some time and effort to become usefull with a heavy. And that is why many people should stick with a .375 or a .416. But if you can master a heavy there is no better weapon for dangerous game. The difference in K/O between a heavy and a .375 is very apparent and that is why I like heavies in the tight stuff.

And I have to agree with Pondoro Taylor all of my bolt action dangerous game rifles are Mauser actions and they are all short barreled and fast handling. My .375 Is a mod 70 claw action as well and sports a 20" barrel my .458Lott is a ditto except it sports a 22" barrel. I personally believe that your looking for major trouble using a push feed action on D.G. . But hey that's just my humble opinon.;)
