I've wanted a light mount for my Polish 1960 AK for awhile, but really could not find a decent mounting system until discovering GG&G. I balked a bit at the $50 price, but figured what the hey. With a TLR-1 HL, I would have 638 lumens of night-time illumination for the bedside and deer lease.
It should have been easy enough; the instructions claim it should slip easily under the gas tube with no disassembly required. That's good, because the Ultimak rail and Aimpoint 9000L it wears is loc-tighted into place, and that aim point is dead on.
Unfortunately, the Green Mountain barrel on the Polish 1960 is a fatter profile, and the Ultimak is a wider tube. Off comes the whole rig. Of course, getting it off ruins the base mount bolt of one of the cheap-ish Aimpoint 30mm rings, preventing me from easily removing it, and certainly not allowing me to put it back on with any decent torque.
I ordered these Weaver Low-Tactical rings, Picatinny specific, and though they are a bit higher they still allow the Aimpoint to co-witness the irons.
All that weight up front also meant the AK74 style brake had to go, so I ordered this much lighter (and shorter) birdcage mount from AK supply.
So my 5 minute job turned into ordering new parts, lots of fiddling, and now another trip to the range to dial it all in. And I love every bit of it!
Now to walk up some night-time piggies.........
