I've wanted a light mount for my Polish 1960 AK for awhile, but really could not find a decent mounting system until discovering GG&G. I balked a bit at the $50 price, but figured what the hey. With a TLR-1 HL, I would have 638 lumens of night-time illumination for the bedside and deer lease.

It should have been easy enough; the instructions claim it should slip easily under the gas tube with no disassembly required. That's good, because the Ultimak rail and Aimpoint 9000L it wears is loc-tighted into place, and that aim point is dead on.

Unfortunately, the Green Mountain barrel on the Polish 1960 is a fatter profile, and the Ultimak is a wider tube. Off comes the whole rig. Of course, getting it off ruins the base mount bolt of one of the cheap-ish Aimpoint 30mm rings, preventing me from easily removing it, and certainly not allowing me to put it back on with any decent torque.

I ordered these Weaver Low-Tactical rings, Picatinny specific, and though they are a bit higher they still allow the Aimpoint to co-witness the irons.

All that weight up front also meant the AK74 style brake had to go, so I ordered this much lighter (and shorter) birdcage mount from AK supply.

So my 5 minute job turned into ordering new parts, lots of fiddling, and now another trip to the range to dial it all in. And I love every bit of it!

Now to walk up some night-time piggies.........

Nice... looks like a great rifle for killing some pigs! I am wanting to get an AK to set up similarly to keep around as a trunk gun and for stalk hunting. I've thought about one of those $400 VZ58s from Palmetto, but I don't like how you can't co-witness them with a dot like yours, and I like the greater after-market for AKs. I was going to spring for a Saiga conversion, but then the Feds started threatening to cage people for bringing Russian products into the country, and the prices shot up. I might hold off on the AK purchase for a while.

The newer WASR 10's are worth a look. Chrome lined bore, they are actually straight now, with better rivets, and better bolsters in the mag well. Most imported after 2008 will have these improvements. If it has the side optic mount, it is likely the newer issued. I have an LGS with dozens to choose from, all around $500.

I'm thinking of grabbing one as well, this one came out too pretty to beat the crap out of.
