Well, I started the summer off carrying a little Gerber Paraframe. I then switched to a Gerber FAST (small model) and then to a CRKT M16, which I thought was the perfect EDC until the pocket clip bent out when it snagged on an armchair- I bent it back with pliars, it snagged again, and I put it in my drawer, where I left it.
Later that day I was rifling throgh some stuff when, lo and behold, I found my Case Stockman, which had been lost for about 3 years. I put it in my pocket and forgot about it., until, later that day, I had to open a package, and I found I could easily open one of the blades on my Stockman one-handed, easy. So I figure what the hell, I'll carry it. And I have been doing just that.
Course, that won't be the only one I carry. I'll occasionally switch it for the SAK Spartan, and I also carry a pair of folding steel sciccors to cut stuff with as well. Going to the Lake? I'll leave the Stockman at home and take the heavy-loaded SAK. I'll also occasionally carry my Boker Stockman, once I get it good and sharp. The Buck 110 or the cheapo Meyerco rip-off of it, with the thumb stud, will be on my belt. I also see a Leatherman Kick in my future.
Here's the Meyerco along with a cheapo trench dagger:

And I'm going to be ordering one of these for my new EDC, if it is legal in NC (not sure about the length?)

As for the CRKT, those Gerbers, etc, I'm not sure about them.

Good for you - that 048 Case can be found for about $22 and I've bought a couple of them to rehandle. I replaced the bolsters on one with titanium and then put Ironwood handles on it. :) I carry a 048 and a SAK everyday.

Almost any Case like that is considered a standard pocket knife under the law. As long as the longest blade doesn't go too far beyond 4" and you don't pop a "One Armed Bandit" (screw on thumb stud) on it you'll be within the law.

I heard it was 4'', after that you had to have a pocket clip with the pocket clip clipped- but I could be misinformed.
However I also think there is some ambiguity to this law

"- 14-269 (excerpts). Carrying concealed weapons. (a) It shall be
unlawful for any person, except when on his own premises,
willfully and intentionally to carry concealed about his
person any bowie knife, dirk, dagger... razor... or other
deadly weapon of like kind. This section does not apply to
an ordinary pocket knife carried in a closed position. As
used in this section, "ordinary pocket knife" means a
small knife, designed for carrying in a pocket or purse,
which has its cutting edge and point entirely enclosed by
its handle, and that may not be opened by a throwing,
explosive, or spring action...
I think this case would qualify as an "ordinary pocket knife", but there is some ambiguity.
and does anyone here know how to poste a quote?!!!

To use a quote just push the quote button just above the text box. It looks like a cartoon speech balloon between the image and # buttons.

Go here to see that there are county to county regulations on knife length and carry method.
While some counties allow 4" blades, most specify 3" and a few like Mecklenburg/Charlotte (my hood) specify 3.5
I checked this out recently but will be darned if I can find the citation for you now.
The "safe" blade length is 3" though. That way you don't get into a "thing" with a police officer who wants to confiscate your knife, depending on what county you're in.
I'll be going to my Criminal Law class in the AM and will ask my prof (a former prosecutor) about the specs.
NC laws are very odd, I'm finding.

Yep.
Durham Co. does not specify blade length. I think something like a Cold-Steel Ti-Lite 6'' would be out, but I think I can carry this knife.

That's a very interesting table, wheelgunslinger. Thanks for posting it.

Also, it is important to remember that while state law may not specify a length, local laws may. Whether a state or local law does or doesn't specify a length or not does not mean that an individual LEO will or won't confiscate your knife or that "intent to go armed" laws won't be applied if you say that you carry a knife for self defense (stupid mistake my son made years ago in Nashville).

Look up your state and local laws yourself. Don't take the word of a LEO, gunshop clerk, sister's uncle's brother or some mod on the errornet;).

Very good advice HSO. Probably the best I've ever seen on any gun/knife site.

I didn't get a chance to talk to my prof about the knife issue since he spent the whole class explaining illegal search and seizure and the exceptions thereof and ran out quickly.
