J Frame Smith and Wesson Hammer Spring Strength?

This is something that can be inferred by looking at the Wolff spring kits. They will have a smattering of different numbers (lbs ostensibly) and somewhere they will reference the factory spring in with the numbers.

It shows factory hammer spring of 8.5 lbs. for centerfire and 12 lbs for rimfire.

To me, the numbers are meaningless other than a frame of reference. I have no clue how they are measured. I have used the tool to measure engine valve springs so I have a better understanding of their measurement but so far I have no idea how a gun spring of X lbs is measured.

I just try to get a reference on the factory springs and go one lighter or heavier until I reach my desired function whatever that may be.

If you're thinking about changing a spring to adjust trigger feel, be aware that it is important to keep a balance between the Main spring and the Rebound spring

I bought a used J frame that already had a reduced power hammer spring installed. It fired reliably in single action but not in double action. I figured I would put in an original strength hammer spring. If that eliminates the problem I think I’ll be good to go. Ordered it from Wolff yesterday. Fingers crossed!!

I've heard this before but I'm not sure what this means or how it applies. I have bought a couple of new S&W's and many used S&W's were I have installed lighter rebound springs without issue, sometimes even dropping down to 12 lbs. This has a noticeable effect on the trigger pull while not messing with the mainspring and causing ignition issues. The trigger return is weakened and in theory can cause issues with the trigger resetting however I haven't ever had this happen and probably have in excess of 10,000 rounds through guns with a lighter rebound spring.

I have tried reduced hammer springs in a number of guns and even dropping down to the next closest spring weight has caused reliability issues a majority of the times. At this point I don't ever mess with the mainspring. It might only be one light strike per hundred and only when shooting double action, but I don't want to have any misfires.

Weak trigger return is the cause of short stroking the DA trigger. If you're not using the DA trigger up to it's potential, you'd likely never notice
