I recently got a 30.06 and am interested in using FMJ ammo for target practice since it seems to be cheaper than hunting ammo. What brands are recommended? Are there any to stay away from?

Federal American Eagle Ammunition 30-06 Springfield (M1 Garand) 150 Grain Full Metal Jacket

Remington UMC Ammunition 30-06 Springfield 150 Grain Full Metal Jacket

Prvi Partizan Ammunition 30-06 Springfield (M1 Garand) 150 Grain Full Metal Jacket

Three examples of brands. Even bulk 30-06 using 150 grain FMJ bullets runs over a buck a round for decent stuff. I have never used the Privi but many say it's good ammo and brass.

If you don't care there is steel cased bulk 30-06 from Wolf and others. I only linked to brass cased. The bulk 30-06 steel cased stuff can be had for less money. A Google of "bulk 30-06 ammo" will bring up a dozen hits.

I have good luck with PPU ammo in my BAR. I can get soft point hunting ammo for around $15 a box. PPU shoots good and it knocks critters dead. What more can you ask of PPU? Use www.ammoseek.com www.gumwatcher.com www.gunbot.net to search for the best prices. Ordering ammo online can be frustrating until you learn the ropes. There is always someone who offers a bargain price on ammo and charges a lot on shipping. I do not know what kind of rifle you have. Steel case ammo can be used for plinking, checking your scope or sights. Some rifles shoot steel case ammo just as well as brass case ammo. I keep some steel case ammo on hand. It shoots within a minute of supper all day long. 180gr soft points will kill most critters in North America.

Right now the sportsmans guide has deal on their membership cards. You buy a card for $30. In return you get a gift card for $20 and free shipping on the order you place when you buy the membership card. I get most of my rifle ammo from the sportsmans guide. They might be a dollar more a box of ammo but they have free shipping specials quite often. if you buy a couple boxes of ammo each time they have free shipping it won't take long to have plenty of ammo for the next shortage or any other stunts manufacturers/.gov want to pull.
Sportsmans Guide has free shipping now.

Jackketed 30-06 ammo.

The ones mentioned are great, But STAY AWAY from the French Surplus ammo sometimes encountered in silver and blue boxs. 50% failure rate and corrosive, berdan primers. Don't see much of it any more but watch out for it. It's crap. :cuss:

I have never tried Golden Bear in my 30/06. I have shot Brown and Silver Bear in my 30/06 but they were under $10 a box when I bought that steel case ammo. You may want to try a box. I don't see how brass plating steel case ammo is going to make a difference. Golden Bear did not shoot any better than regular steel case ammo in my 7.62x54r. But the 168 gr bullet may prove to be more useful than a low power 140gr cartridge.

sgammo does charge $10 or $12 for shipping. When I order HP ammo for the pistols I am going to try some of these 125gr. My wife may enjoy shooting these. According to Remington they have over 2,700 ft lb of energy at the muzzle, that is a lot better than a 100gr 243. I usually get my 9mm HP ammo from sgammo. They charge about the same for 50 rounds as the the LGS charges for 20/25 rounds.

These are some great hunting bullets at a good price. I shot a nice black bear with a 180gr from my 91/30. He just went down on the spot. I made a decent shot right at the base of his neck. I wanted to get a rug made from his pelt. The taxidermist said it would be difficult to use the head. I will get another bear next season. They love fresh peanuts. One of the farmers that lets me hunt his land is planning to rotate 2/3 of his land into peanuts next year. Maybe I will get one of the larger bears in the area.
