Let me start off by saying I am by no means a professional gunsmith. When I was in college I did take an excellent gunsmithing class, but that is the extent of my knowledge. I have successfully worked on my growing flock of 10/22s and a couple of my revolvers with good success.

The one gun that I own that needed some serious trigger work was my Ruger PC9 Carbine. This gun does not need a super match grade trigger, but it would be nice if it had a trigger approaching the quality of my 10/22 rifles. My PC9 had two trigger issues. The first issue was a heavy trigger pull probably in the 7-8 lb range. The second issue was the extreme amount of take up, or slack in the trigger (I am not sure if the correct word is “take up†or slackâ€). The trigger pull was fixed by cutting off 3 coils from the sear plunger spring, but the slack in the trigger was going to be more difficult to fix. I had several ideas for fixing the trigger slack, but since I have limited tools in my small little shop I had to be creative.

The best two ways I could see to remove the slack from the trigger pull would be with some sort of reverse over travel screw, or find a way to build up the metal on the bottom of the trigger. Over on RimfireCentral one of the guys had used some JB Weld to do some work on his 10/22. Since I do not have any other way to build up the bottom of my trigger I decided to try the JB Weld route. It looked a little rough at first, but I was able to file it down to the point where the JB Weld seems almost a part of the metal trigger.

My little Carbine now has a trigger that is almost as good as my nicest 10/22. It has a very small amount of slack and a short crisp 3-4 lb release. Total cost not counting my time was $20 for a couple of new files, and $3.49 for the JB Weld.

Check out the attached pics if you are curious to try this yourself.
