Out shooting one of my favorite long rifles today. I’m not sure if I posted this year before. This is a compilation of some pictures that are old and new. This is a 20 caliber long rifle. I load it with between five and 10 g of 4F. (22 Long rifle or 22 Magnum case as my Measure)
Five grains has little to no trouble going through three-quarter inch plywood at 25 yards and 10 grains gets me just about through a pressure treated 2 x 4. It also flips the 3/4 pound steel block holding the Clay without any trouble

First my favorite picture from the original owner. The cat has passed on but it’s still a great picture.

All the powder that you’re going to need for about 25 shots and priming the pan

Are use a 22 pallet with a baby inserted as my projectile. Starts snug but easy to load with the ramrod. No patch needed

It also has no trouble dimpling up my steel targets, thus I use AR plate made for target shooting when backer needed.

Likely what u feel safe shooting w open sights at small target?
It also has the energy as noted above. It is much more powerful than my .22 Striker air rifle at 800fps

25-30 yards , I pop clays free-standing without issue

beyond that I would want to be rested. I would feel humane at 50

beyond that it is sight limitation

JR Salvo made this.
American longrifle builder, now passed
This one was built in the 1990’s

I'm curious about whether the long barrel is actually necessary to obtain the velocity considering the small powder charges.
For example, a 22 LR is said to burn its smokeless powder charge within the first 17 inches of barrel or so, after which velocity doesn't increase.

But I do understand that it was built on a long rifle pattern for traditional reasons, and the long barrel enhances accurate sighting.
How long is the barrel? Is it over 42 inches long?
What is its twist rate?
Any idea who manufactured the barrel?
I love the distinctive shape of the forearm and forend cap,
It certainly is a rare beauty.

Length of pull is around 14”. Overall rifle length is about 60”. Weight is estimated at around 5-6 pounds. Smooth bore. Salvo built this barrel. (There was a .25 Up for sale at about the same time that had a rayl barrel.) 44” from about the touch hole to the muzzle.
points like a dream. Very nimble
His style was along the lines of “southern mountain.”
Pictures are hard for reference, maybe this will give you a better reference, 22 Long rifle/ spent case

JR Salvo was from the Charleston, SC area. He was a member of the Charlestown Longrifles Muzzleloading Gun Club near Moncks Corner, SC. His specialty was Southern Mountain rifles, plain with few embellishments. JR also excelled in forging throwing axes and tomahawks for the buckskinners here in the southeastern US.

Thank u^
I am lucky to own a piece of his work

As I understand it, he lived in a relatively restricted area and was not allowed to shoot outdoors around his property. He would often shoot in his basement with some of these small caliber rifles.
