Judge Joe Brown does one of my favorite television "judge shows," the kind in which small claims court cases are abitrated and the ruling is final.

In one of the episodes I watched yesterday, Brown warned the defendant that it was not a good idea to attack people because there was no way to know which of them might be carrying a gun. The defendant, a smug young preppie, laughed at the idea.

Brown laughed back and said "I carry a gun every day of my life and so does she," pointing at the show's bailiff.

Judge Joe Brown, I discovered as a result of that show, has his head screwed on properly where self defense and firearms are concerned. Take a look at this article by Larry Pratt to see some of what I've found: http://www.gunowners.org/op9903.htm

I'm glad to see such common sense coming from Judge Joe Brown. He's a nationally renowned figure, willing to stand up for a poition to commonly labeled as extremist- and he doesn't make a distinction between him and his peers and the rest of society.

Judge Joe is pretty with it on his rulings. He actually has common sense and an understanding of the law. Just another reason to like an already likable person.

I never liked any of those judge shows, but he seems to get it. That's something to be said, even for other "pro gun" celebs.

Yeah, unfortunately, most "hot chicks" have their heads up and locked.

Judge Joe Brown rocks.

His bio lists that he resides in Los Angeles. According to Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department records there is no Joe Brown listed as having been issued a CCW, so it would be interesting to learn under what authority he carries. Possibly a local police department issued the CCW to him, but most defer issuance to the county sheriff in LA County.

Don't officers of the court have the right to carry?

He may still be employed as a judge in County Or City of Los Angeles. Or he might have been deputized at some point like Theodore Nugent.

Judges in LA County still have to get CCWs. Of course they are issued just for the asking, but he's not on that list. He was a judge in another state I believe, and California does not honor out of state CCWs. Only if he is a retired LEO with ID could he carry under HR 218, but I see nothing on his bio that says he was ever a LEO.

I'm just curious about this. He could be issued through LAPD, even though they have stated they defer to the Sheriff's Department they have been known to issue themselves.

I noticed on another episode that he said his bailiff was a retired deputy sheriff, so she probably qualifies under HR218. I'm don't know about him, it doesn't look like he was ever a cop.

Here is the judges bio:

Judge Joe

We would probably be surprised to find out how many Judges have guns on them while running their court, just in case.
But some of these same Judges won't think twice about ruling against someone who defended himself, his family, home, or someone else with a firearm.

Brown laughed back and said "I carry a gun every day of my life and so does she," pointing at the show's bailiff.

The way I read it, he said he carries.

He didn't say anything about a permit.

BTW, His Bailif was one of the first on those shows I noticed was actually armed.

He may have residences in places other than Los Angeles, where he could have a CCW. Maybe he was issued one in another county, or state.

In the event that I have to appear before a Judge, any Judge, I hope he's carrying. I seem to get along better, have more in common & share more views with folks who do!

I have no way to know whether "Joe Brown" is his real name or a pseudonym, but that is the name by which he became nationally known for a great many years as the Criminal Court judge in Tennessee while he heard cases including the last appeals of James Earl Ray.

Television shows during the summer usually are reruns, especially during the daytime when these judge shows are broadcast. I don't know when this particular show was first run and I did not pay attention to its copyright year at the end of the broadcast but I doubt that it is recent. Joe Brown remained a Tennessee judge until 2000. According to his biography on "The Ultimate Judge Joe Brown Page" " Brown currently lives in Memphis, TN, and spends as much time as possible raising his two sons."

My quotation of Brown's remark was not a legal transcript nor was it intended as verbatim. It reflects my best recollection of what he said several hours after the fact and is no more than reasonably accurate. Furthermore I knoweth not, except that I am not Judge Joe Brown. I will not deny that I am Judge Judy, however, but I shall maintain silence if interrogated on that point unless I am paid a substantial sum of money.

I might have him mixed up with another TV judge, but I understood him to be a left wing scumbag.

If this is the same guy, he probably thinks it is OK to CCW - for him.

Yes Judge Joe Brown is a fellow gun enthusiast. I recall a thread a few years ago in some board where a poster said he often saw him at Gun Shops in TN.
