I just bought a 1911A1 Remington Remington Rand and I would like to know more information about my gun. I would like to know if my gun is all original and if it has been arsenal refinished or not. The barrel is also marked HS as well, and the magazine is marked Colt 45 AUTO. I paid $950 tax included for this gun, was this too much?

Looks Original, but may be arsenal reconditioned. That is very hard to determine.Looks like you got a very nice pistol, you could enjoy shooting.

Arsenal reconditioned is just fine with collectors. That is a very nice looking 1911A1. Everything looks proper and period correct. Go shoot something!!

Are you wanting to shoot it or set it aside as a collector? If you wanted a piece of history that you could shoot? Looks like you got it. Too much? That is VERY much in the eye of the beholder. As these got to be harder and harder to find I watched prices go to what I thought of as shocking. So if you are happy, no you did not pay too much. VERY few Surplus pistols like this did not get at least one trip to an armory to be done over during their service life. An expert could tell you for sure if they could handle it and take it apart but, is it to have as a shooter with history? If so who cares. Great pistol, enjoy it. Now if you want to find out to decide if it would be set aside as a collector? Then find a pro who can look it over for you.

The 1911's I have seen that went to arsenal rebuild have ANAD and a year stamped into the right side of the frame near the mag release. Your magazine isn't GI.

Price is about in line (or perhaps a little below) what you would expect to pay for an original M1911A1 in that condition. As pointed out, the magazine is not original military issue.

I'd have been a buyer at that price all day long. I think you did fine. I paid $1600 several years ago when I got mine, a late production 1943 Rand that was never re-arsenaled. Got some other goodies as well, including half a dozen period mags and a holster.

Depends on your standards.
Will guarantee that it was taken apart with a bunch of other 1911A1, cleaned to boot camp spec, and reassembled with whatever part was next in the bin or bucket.

Taken to bits and each part gauged, probably not--that usually gets a stamped indication.

Finish is really good. Parts look good. Price is right, too.

Considering that the CMP sold thousands of them so far at $1050 sight unseen I would say you did pretty well.
