Well, I finally have made a great first step and can call myself a rifle owner. I know I may have made a big mistake, but I purchased a brand new DPMS Sportical 5.56 on GunBroker.com for $882 + $45.00 shipping. Yeah, I know they are worth around $650; however I did not want to wait 1 year to have my first assault weapon. And with Barack Obama in power, I didn't necesarilly want to gamble on my prospects of owning a gun in the future.

Was wondering, do others think this is a bad and hasty move on my part? I have seen some guys on the site selling Sporticals 5.56 as high as $1400. Sure, some of those guys are a bit eccentric, but I felt like it was a good deal. Now, I Can start shooting and learning the ropes and I am happy. I don't need to wait a year. A gun dealer says he will be building a DPMS AP4 Carbine 5.56 with an upgraded barrel in the near future, like 2 weeks - 2 months and will sell me it for $800, so I can have a second gun in my new arsenal. I think this is a good time to start collecting.

Well.. anyone know good places to get scopes and what type of scope to get for this type of gun? Also, I was interested in flip up sights, since the Sportical doesn't have one. I suppose I also need to invest in some magazines and lot of bullets. What is best kind of bullets for the target range that won't destroy my gun? I hear Wolf is to avoid, any good suggestions?

THe person I got from at gunbroker only has 39 reviews, but all are good. I hope they don't gip me, but they look honest.. I hope. . I am a newbie as I said, so I hope I didn't do anything I regret.

Now, I am searching for a LR-308 DPMS. One guy is selling one LR-308 Bull for $1750 and says he willl sell me, a scope and rings for $2300 and throw in a Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x40 scope with it. He is making some claim, that sounds a bit inflated, that he paid $800 for this scope, when I am finding them on some online websites for around $500-$600. He claims the gun is new, only 20 rounds or something through it. Hard to trust people online, what do people think, $2300 for LR-308 bull and scope, dang I didn't want to spend that money, but that is way cheaper than others I seen. I have no way of verifying his scope really is a Leopold, he just sent me a pic, maybe I will upload it and people can tell me if it is a Leopold VX-III 4.5x14-40 like he says. Is there any good places to get high quality scopes for cheap?

first, congrats.

Yeah, I know they are worth around $650; however I did not want to wait 1 year to have my first assault weapon.

the way ive always felt about this subject is this: in a year the money would have been gone anyway, but you will still have the rifle.

so dont worry about whether you spent too much.

there is a good chance someone will post a stupid chart showing you how many other rifles are way better.

take some advice, ignore it, its not even pertaining to your model.

i think you will find the little panther to be very accurate and reliable.

i dont own one, ive only had colt and bushmaster, but ive been impressed by the dpms rifles at the range.

ive seen many that will shoot 1" at 100yds.

congrats and welcome to the ar club.

Given what I'm seeing with prices recently, I think you did fine. A lot of stores and online sites are totally out of AR rifles. Most of those that have them have hiked prices significantly. I've seen a lot of ARs going fo Sig prices lately, so relatively speaking, your price doesn't seem bad. Now, take it out and run some ammo through it!!!

You did not buy an "assault weapon." You bought a semi-automatic rifle that is black and looks evil to the gun grabber crowd.

An assault weapon is one that is either automatic when firing, or selective fire through the means of a switch on the receiver.

If I were you, I'd use the proper term when referring to it. Semi-automatic rifle.

The DPMS is a very good semi-automatic rifle, by the way. Congratulations. Stock up on magazines.

I have one that I bought a while ago and have only good things to say about DPMS. Congrats enjoy it.

I really like the slick sportical upper receiver. When the dust settles on demand I plan on using one on a custom precision upper build

:uhoh: OOPS.. Sorry.. Pardon me..I said I was not experienced with all this.. I will never call it that again.. I am real bad with gun terminology.

Well. I am thankful to own a good quality AR now for a price that is not robbery. Just have to pray to God that it gets to me safely from the dealer.

What type of magazines does this gun take? Do all AR15 magazines work for the DPMS? Can I interchange AR15 magazines on all the differnt type of .223/5.56 DPMS guns? I am also planning on getting an AP4 Carbine later perhaps.

Can anyone advise me what are some good scopes in $100-$200 range for this gun? Can I place any size scope on the sportical? Is there any problems in buying a used Leopold scope? I was told they are one of the best brands.

I don't believe the barrel is chrome lined. Moly something. If your intention is to shoot a ton of ammunition than a chrome lined barrel is called for.

As for scopes? Pick and choose. I prefer sights the flip down kind.

Heres the description:
This auction is for a new in the box DPMS Sportical 5.56NATO (.223), 16" barrel w/A2 flash hider (birdcage), 6 position collapsable stock, comes with a hard case and 2 - 30 round magazines. Flattop low pro design, scope in picture is NOT included! Email with any questions. Better buy now while you still can. Thanks for looking.

I am not really knowledgable, but I don't think it has a chrome lined barrel. It should be just as shipped from the factory. On the DPMS site is says it has a 16" light contour barrel. It doesn't mention the chrome lining. What is the advantage of chrome lining, does it help preserve the barrel or make it last longer? How much would it cost to upgrade the gun to a chrome barrel, including hiring the gunsmith?

Congratulations on your purchase. Does the DPMS Sportical feature a chromelined barrel?

Seriously Tim, you know it doesn't nor does it have a forward assist or dust cover and OP if you have seen some of the slams Tim gleefully deals out about anything other than Colt AR's you'd be wondering why he's asking like I am.

The sportical will serve most needs. You could end up replacing the upper receiver and bbl if you feel that not having those features will ultimately cause you trouble. Many AR's including my DPMS do have the chrome lined bbl and forward assist. I've never had to use the FA but I've never been in combat either.

Yep, they all use the same mags, they're not brand specific. You can use any brand mag with any brand AR. For example, I have a Bushmaster and DPMS; they both share mags, I dont have certain mags set aside for each gun.

4Freedom:

The DPMS sportical could very likely serve you well. Remember to always clean and lubricate your rifle (especially the barrel) after range use and prior to prolonged storage. The sportical has certain limitations, however for your purposes (I am assuming range toy) it would most likely suffice. A chromelined barrel/chamber will let you get by without cleaning it as frequently. With proper maintenance you should be fine. You'll be wanting another AR down the road I can promise you. Look into Charles Daly and LMT for your next purchase if you are looking to upgrade. Good luck and keep us posted. God Bless America, may she always remain free.

Of those two I have a LMT. Runs like a charm. The CDD has received rave reviews from users over at m4carbine.net and AR15.com. In fact, it is probably the most gun for the money right now, bar none. Let me know if you have any more questions.

ya, i just helped a guy at the range change his gas rings on his lmt.

FlyinBryan: Im running a BCM BCG in her. Most all of my ARs are Franken guns besides my Colts. I am partial to Colts if you can't tell :). My next AR will most likely be a Charles Daly A4 USMC Build. What ARs do you have?

You know... my girlfriend always asks me why I'm buying up stuff right now... She wants a new flat screen TV, and a auto car starter (which I just got her)... I normally respond that it won't be illegal to buy a flat screen in 6 months or a year...

So do I think you're being hasty? Nope. You found a good gun, at a good price, at the right time. Congrats!

You made a good choice, and bought a nice rifle!

optics are a verry personal decision imo, so try a few out that would be ideal for its intended use.

in fact he did buy an assault weapon. one definition of an assault weapon is any military weapon used in the past or present, and militaries all over the world have had semi-auto.I.E. M-14,SKS,CETME.all are semi-auto and yet they are all classified as a assault weapon. and to get real technichal, your country, state, and local laws can classify a gun as a assault weapon. some things that make and assault weapon are detachable magazines, pistol grips, folding stocks etc.

check this out- http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/assault_weapon please reply if you think im wrong
