Took this picture tonight (Thanks to H&H's friend Dirk for the beautiful round and to H&H for the fired brass!).

First three are pretty easy. Four and five are a little tougher. As you can see, number four is just fired brass.

Take a guess!

Give us some details on that 4 bore. Looks like a solid turned brass projectile. How much does it weigh? Pot shot guess 25-3500 gr. 7-8 oz. Unless the velocity is under 1000 fps, that looks like it would do a through and through on a bull elephant, front to back.

Dunno, I would have to ask Dirk. He does turn the cartridge case and bullet on a lathe. I'm guessing maybe 700-1000 grains though, since a 4 bore lead ball would weigh 1750 grains.

True, but a quarter pound lead ball would take up less room. I'm sticking to my guess of low to mid 2000's. Ask him what kind of velocity he's getting if you could. Demanding gun nerds want to know.

Just for fun, I ran some numbers through a free recoil energy calculator. Assuming a rifle weight of 15lbs, a projectile weight of 2000gr and a velocity of 1800 ft per second, I arived at 615 ft lbs of energy. Thats over 14 times the energy created by a 30lb 50 bmg. Yowza. Might not move the Missouri several feet, but short of a vehicle mount, I wouldn't fire it.

Which long arm does he use these Holy-Toledo-Ohio 4-bore cartridges in where he finds them "not unpleasant" to shoot?

So how far into a herd of bison will that 4 bore go? Really irritates me that such a round gets a sporting exemption, but not 14.5x114 (or 12.7x108, for that matter, even for single-shots)

As far as recoil..."To answer your question, kind of like that" (can't find a GIF of Elmer Fudd being sent over the horizon by his scattergun's recoil, today :()
