I went to the gunshow on SAT and picked up a new S&W 642. It was only $369, which I think is a decent price and I needed a small, light carry gun.

I really wanted the super light Titanium version (342?) but at $600, I think not! Anyway, I have had many small pistols since owning a Charter Arms Off Duty .38spl and I found myself comparing all guns to that light weight snubbie. I think I have finally come to the conclusion that there really isn't anything better than a light weight snubbie for a really small CCW.

I have had several revolvers but this is my first hammerless and I was wondering what people thought of the 642? I could have chosen the 637 or the 642 for the same price but I remember the only thing I didn't like about my Charter was the hammer would snag on my pocket lining of my jacket when carried there. I thought the Bodygaurd or the 642 would slove this.

I don't have a holster yet and would like some advice. What works for you? I plan on carrying it in my jacket pocket without a holster in the winter but need a holster for summer. I had a Fobus for my Charter that I didn't like because it was uncomfortable and stuck out too far from my hip. I think a leather IWB or SOB might be what I am looking for but I am open to new ideas also.

How much ammo can I put through it without adverse effects? It is the new 642-2 that says +P on the bbl and I will mostly shoot standard power .38 loads, not +Ps. I was told my Charter wouldn't stand up to much shooting but I got it used and put 2000 rounds through it and it is still working fine for my friend that owns it now. As a matter of fact, he still lets me shoot it when we go shooting together and I can still roll cans with it and it is decently tight. Has anyone worn out their Airweight S&W?

Good pistol. I prefer the 638 as I never enjoyed roll checking on the trigger without the hammer to hold on to.

Shooting +Ps in your pistol is like driving your car at 100 mph. You can do it, but it will accelerate wear and tear. Buy multiple copies of the gun you prefer.

It's a good time to buy a new 642...

They're "on sale" everywhere. I just went out to my regular gun shop to talk "bad backs" with the owner. (It's easier to speak of such things with someone who has the same problem.) Anyway, he had what I thought was a used 642 because of the price. However, it was new so I bought it. :)

They're the top o the heap, imho. This is the all steel Model 940.

I have its darker-hued cousin, the 442. Fantastic little revolver that (with a proper pocket holster) disappears in the pocket of my vest or jacket... It's my "third gun" pretty much constantly from October through March, replacing my nickel Model 38, which was just too purty for such an unglamorous job. :)

makarov1989,

Small world!! I also bought a first "hammerless" this Saturday.

When I asked about pocket holster recomendations over at the S&W forum, I got sent to this site by several folks: www.hedleyholsters.com

I'm not familiar with his work, but he sure seems to be highly thought of.

Add another one sold.....I bought mine on Oct 2. What really is surprising is the light weight.

Seems to be a great little gun.

I find them the baby bear of snubs...not too heavy and not too light...just right....when my 442 started to pit on the cylinder I had it hard chromed by fordsguns...I guess you can call it a 542...

It grew on me

The first time I bought a hammerless S&W (a 442, I think) I didn’t care for it much. Couldn’t get the hang of it. But now, I really like my 642. I have a number of holsters; Safariland pocket, Kramer pocket, and a Kydex IWB.

For an IWB it is hard to beat the uncle mike's model 36 clip on....I have lots of high end leather for my P7 and other more robust steel, but this gun is so light, a lot of the better leather is overkill....

So far I am impressed with my 642. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet but I was looking it over and I was not able to find any real problems. Most guns will have a flaw here or there but this one is almost flawless.

The only slight flaw I have found is the screw on the cylinder latch is a little bit marred. It looks like someone put it together with a smaller than correct size screw driver and the slot got a bit yawed. It is not bad, but it is the only thing I have been able to notice.

I wish it had a red ramp front sight instead of the plain steel sight. The built in trigger lock doesn't need to exist but that is easy to live with. Also the trigger could be lighter and smoother but it is new and may get better. It is easy to stage so I think I may be able to get some decent groups to see how well it shoots.

I have had other S&W revolvers that had worse flaws than this gun. I think S&W may have turned a corner and brought the quality up. I have been afraid of new Smiths because of all the bad talk I have heard about them but this one seems as good as any. I won't be afraid of buying a new one again. Maybe a new M-66 2.5" is on my list now.;)

Try Uncle Mike's pocket and IWB holsters. I think you can get both for no more than $25.00. Also try a Hip Grip. It's great for those quickie outings to the backyard or the store.

I got my uncle mike's IWB on the web for less than 9 bucks....one mod I did make was to stitch the top rear of the holster a bit to create a little draw tension..this keeps the holster from slipping off and also keps the gun from riding up out of the holster when you sit down....since I carry my pocket guns n my rear pocket, it also doubles as a pocket holster by slipping the clip over the outside of my pocket......hard to beat for the money....

I have had the Uncle Mike's holsters before but they tend to be loose. I want something that holds the gun a little more snug. Do any of the Uncle Mike's holsters hold the 642 snugly?

I love the Uncle Mike's boot grips that the gun comes with, I think they are perfect and I am really picky about having the right grip for the right job/gun. Thanks.
