Picked up a smith and Wesson mod. 19 snub ( which is a whole story by it self ) that had a few light rust spots. I read on line several ways to approach it but I went with the copper scrubbing pads ( scotch brite ) and Birchwood Casey Barricade oil and I’m telling you it’s like magic a few strokes and the rust just disappears ! and does not hurt the blueing. I tried it on heavy rusted metal and it worked well. So just passing the info along.

Just remembered I tried something like that (many, many moons ago), using penetrating oil and a real copper penny to remove rust. Worked successfully at getting rid of rust on a magazine.

Back when pennies were really copper it was a common trick to rub it with a penny. Same principal just a new source of copper.

Good info. The only 3M copper scrubbing pads I can find say "copper coated" in the product name or description. Was the one that you used copper coated, or did you find a 100% copper version?

There's another similar (but non-copper) product for which I've seen a lot of very positive reviews. Big 45 Frontier Metal Cleaner. http://www.big45metalcleaner.com/

0000 steel wool and CLP worked for very light rust on an old Remington Rand I worked on. Used a pre 1982 penny for some of the heavier stuff. Chore-Boy pads are pure copper, that would probably be a better tool than the steel wool on blued surfaces. I have read that they work pretty well for getting leading out of a barrel as well

I use choreboy for rust and lead removal from barrel. Check with magnet on any “brass” wool to be sure!

I use Choreboy. It is still copper. A funny story buying some recently. I was in a convenience store and noticed Choreboy single pads behind the counter in a display box. Never seen them packaged individually. I think they were marked $1 each These were smaller than the size normally found at the grocery store. . Being that the last time I needed some and had a really hard time finding the pads, I told the clerk I would take all that was left in the box. I think there were 10-12 pads left. Well, everyone started staring at me and the girl behind me poked her boyfriend in the ribs and nodded toward me. Saw this in the one way glass behind the counter. The clerk even gave me a strange look. Got home and told my girlfriend about the episode and then it hit me, crack heads use the pads to smoke their drugs!! I guess everyone there thought I was some sort of high rolling druggie since I took the whole supply
