Just picked up my first AR15, what to do now?

I'm too lazy to take a picture of the brass and upload them, but this picture is pretty much what my brass looks like.

My suspicion that this is from the brass colliding with the brass deflector is strengthened by marking on the deflector itself. Viewing the video also showed the brass hitting the deflector.

Okay, appreciate it anyway. That is pretty much identical to what my brass looks like, nothing notable that is different from the picture I posted. If those casings look normal to you, then my casings would look normal to you as well. If not, then there's probably something wrong with my casings.

No, those don't look normal to me, and I'll bet it's not the brass deflector. But I'm not anything near expert on this, and more info would be better, but that would require less laziness and more pictures.

When you cycle the bolt by hand, is it smooth?

What about when you chamber a round? Does it go smoothly?

What you are seeing is normal for many rifles. I have M1 Garands that dent the case mouths, an M1A that dents the case mouths and a few ARs that do it. Sometimes they are more pronounced dents depending on the loads. It is normal.

When a round fires there is a violent action that takes place. I suggest to understand what is going on you watch this video, Then I suggest you Google AR 15 Slow Motion Firing and watch a few more. Note what some of the spent cases go through as they are extracted and ejected. You may also want to learn rifle cartridge case anatomy. Wouldn't hurt.

But Appleseed does teach the fundamentals of rifle marksmanship. They aren't "Appleseed's fundamentals", they are they fundamentals. They were around a long time before RWVA or Appleseed came along.

And their price really can't be beat.

I'd say the one caveat to Appleseed is that they'll teach you to shoot with your left arm wrapped up in a sling. I took my dedicated 22LR upper and left CMMG's $20 bolt hold open thingy out of it so I didn't have to screw with trying to hit the bolt release with my right hand.

Appleseed gives excellent instruction in the fundamentals over 2 days, it's free for military, woman, and kids, and only $70 for civilian men over 18. The one I went to shot about 300 rounds (although I left at lunch on the 2nd day), which is about $12 in 22LR, plus I donated $10 for the range they used, so $22 plus gas to get there for some excellent instruction on the basics. You can't beat that with a stick.
