Hey All

I've found a nice K98 Mauser rifle but don't know much about it. The owner told me it was made in Germany and part of a contract to Portugal back in the 40's. It has Portuguese markings on it and the date on there receiver is 1941.I've never heard of a Portugese K98 rifle. Is this a true German contract k98 mauser?

If anyone could give me some information about this rifle that would be great.

Alex

Yes there are such mausers. Many have a Mauser Oberndorf commercial marking on the left hand side of the receivers, with a mix of Weimar and Reichamts, plus it may have differently marked (re)barrels and mismatched bolts and/or stocks and furniture.

Guys, he doesn't own the gun yet so pics might be a problem.

I am no expert but I do know that Mausers were made for many countries so it likely is exactly what the seller says it is. If you like it and the price sounds fair (assuming the Portuguese models are similar in value to most others which I don't know) then buy it.

Thanks for your help guys. The rifle looks just like the K98 on guns America, but not that expensive, The Germans probably had a lot of guns back then so it would make sense if they sold some, I'll post pictures and info when I get it.

I have a NRA mauser reference book, and it says that Germany was making Portugese rifles for export, but many of them ended up in use by the Germans. They will have added the waffenampts.

The picture in the book shows a rifle with the Portugese crest on the reciever and a "Dirty Bird" on the side, where all other 98ks are stamped. IT should date to the early 40's as reported....40-41.
