I went to my local ffl and hes ordering me a german mauser, sog had them on sale and supposed to be very good condition, we'll see when he calls. question for you folks that have a german mauser, how do they shoot? the 8mm round seems potent enough for just about anything, how is it in terms of comparison to a 30-06?

I had a unissued yugo sks but didnt need it as I already have a russian version so the ffl swapped plus some change.my total was 220 bucks delivered to his shop.Hes throwing in a bunch of noncorrosive ammo to boot as well, I think hes curious about them too and wants to see my reaction. so what do you say yea or nay on the german 8mm mauser?

The 8mm Mauser is a potent round in the .30-06 class. It may not have the number of selections that .30 cal has but there are enough 8mm bullets available for almost any task. Commercial US loadings are on the weak side since there are older rifles floating around here, particularly the 1888 Commission rifle, in 8x57 that are weaker than the Model 98. European sporting ammo and, of course, the 8mm surplus on the market are full powered.

The 98k is a great rifle to shoot and is very historical to boot. I hooe thay you enjoy yours.

GM, did you get one with the "markings" intact. I bought my father a K98 for his birthday from Classic arms and it was in very good shape. Try the Romanian 8mm from www.aimsurplus.com , it is very good 8mm and if fairly recently made. I have a Turk mauser also and both rifles are fun to shoot and "battlerifle" accurate. Nothing like my K31's though. My swiss girls are very accurate.

i'm hoping by sunday to be able to be working up some practice loads for my yugo, k98, and whenever i pay off my rem 700 classic.

been copying all kinds of load data whenever i come across it.
you have no idea how much i'm looking forward to being able to shoot my mausers without having to spend 2 hours afterwards cleaning out the corrosive salts from surplus ammo.

Im not sure which one Ill get,I pointed to the pic and said "that one". the price in my ffls flier said 179 or something in that range. there wasnt much in the description cept in very good condition,The ad had the rarer codes on the front page of the flier but they were about 50 bucks more to start off.I think the sling, cleaning rod and bayonet was extra $$ and the pic didnt include the sight hood but the picture looked pretty nice otherwise. If its anything like the color pic and the bore is as nice, I'll be very happy.

Ill post again later when it gets here. uh oh..the c&r bug just bit me again.

Good choice on getting a German 98K. They are not going to be around forever. I have 2 myself, one made by Erma in 1937, and one made by Mauser in 1939. I wanted pre-1940 rifles, so I purchased mine from Empire Arms. A little more costly, but well worth the premium.

well, it finally arrived.it has the markings all intact and the bore is excellent as is the rest of the gun,the receiver and barrel match number wise so far.I didnt have much time to try it out as well as I want yet but I did set up some pop cans at the 100 meter mark and did hit them.potent caliber, thankfully,I had an excellent backstop..

it was a handpick,I did get out my dremel and polish the bolt and some formbys refinisher and removed the old finish and refinished it in linseed oil.I found a exc condition original bayonet/sheath with leather loop as well as the sight hood. I need a leather sling yet and maybe a orig cleaning kit.

I do have a question though, when pulling the bolt all the way back,it stops on the floorplate when its empty and has to be pushed down to slide the bolt forward.normal?

good find from sog.its a byf.

The bolt catching on the mag follower when it's empty is normal. Alerts you to press in another clip after you've emptied the rifle...good feature!

As part of your training routine with your new rifle, have a couple of extra clips available on your belt where you can reach them from any position, and practice fast reloading. Always keep your spare clips in the same position so you can reach them without searching or looking. :D
