Kahr PM9 Vs J-frame

Fastbolt...

Yeah, she's a good woman alright. The thing is, that when we got married, she said NOTHING about guns. For YEARS, she said nothing about guns. Then one day, out of the blue, she goes: "You know, I'd like to get my CCDW". It turned out that she's one of those "natural shots" I've always heard about, but never seen.
She's good with any pistol she picks up, rifles are NOOooo problem, and (incredibly) the recoil or report of any firearm doesn't mean a thing to her. It's amazing when I watch her shoot one of her .38 snubs. I'd tell you the distance she practices at, but you wouldn't believe it. I can hardly believe it! (And I WATCH it!)

P.S. When everybody said that I was going to die (even the doctors), she ushers everyone out and says, "You are NOT going to die"! Then she fed me pancakes because I couldn't move my arms. Seven weeks later, I walked out of that hospital under my own steam. Some woman! :)

Kentucky, my wife was one of those natural shots too. She can outshoot me with a Glock 19! That's pretty sad considering I shoot more.

She is also taking her CHL class next month. It's gonna be great having "backup".:D

I got a PM9 about this time last year, anticipating it becoming replacement for S&W 340 "always gun". But, for various reasons, the 340 still seems to go out the door with me about as frequently - or often more so - than the PM9.

I've got the overmoulded CT grip on the 340, making it a little more bulky than the PM9, but still significantly lighter. (Loaded, 15 ounces vs. 19.4). Trigger work on 340 got it quite close to what PM9 came with from the factory. I'm thankful to have both and have worked out various carry methods with both (which I sometimes do at the same time).

And KR ! Good to see ya. ' Heard ya wuz sick, but did not know the severity. Hope ya gonna stick around for a few more. :D

I'm kinda hit and miss on various parts of THR, but when time, often seem to wander toward "hunting forum" first. FWIW, H & H recently passed along some more of his "Advice on The Wife" a few posts down in http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=66773. ;)

Best Regards, Greybeard

Thanks Greybeard. I plan on sticking around for a while. :)

Double Dot: Your wife too, eh? :) Women!
Is it eyes or hands or both? I just don't know. However, I DO see a LOT of women who are GREAT shots. My wife prefers her revolvers, but she can pick up my Glock 27 and out-shoot me any day of the week.

Birds of a feather..........

For decades the Chief's Special was the one to beat in regards to size, reliability and power. Things got even better with the developement of various alloys.
Then along comes Kahr.......
A side note that blends in well with this thread...
I recently met a lady that LOVES guns and shooting...I took her out for her first real outing with handguns!! She started with y LW Officer's wearing a Ciener .22 conversion unit, fired some light wadcutters through my airweight Chief's, even stepped up to the firing line for a few 230 gr outta the Government model. We rented a XD 9mm for her experiential pleasure(and mine) then went shopping for a small CCW pistol for her. She loved the feel of the Kahr PM9 and bought it. She'll be taking the CCW class soon. Never met a gal so excited by shooting and gunshows and the like. And we have many other, um, compatabilities!
Quite a lady...a keeper, methinks!
The Kahr is too...the PM9 is a sweet shooter, accurate, easy to manage..I am looking around for a used one to suppliment or replace the Jay...think I'll get the Nine for some ammo compatability with my 'shooting' partner!!

Guys, I just read this thread again...

It's because my PM9 has turned into my usual daily carry pistol. ~The concensus seems to be "soft shooter". I agree...and I was surprised. You think the major reason is that the recoil impulse is lessened by the movement of the slide mass? If that's the major reason, Kahr tuned the PM9 just right. I'd never given recoil much thought, 'till I shot an AirLITE Ti .357 mag. At THAT point, I thought about recoil a lot! :) (For DAYS!)
Also, since this PM9 is my first 9MM, it's sort of a novel thing to have. In my entire collection, I seem to have just skipped over the 9MM's completely. I'm finding that I like to shoot "nines". Lotta fun, easy on the arthritis, wide ammo selection, etc...

I got to wring out one of each on Friday!

And they are both right here in front of me.
I have had several Chief's over the years(three S&W and a couple of 'other snub's). I have only fired two Kahr's.
The Kahr gave me MUCH tighter groups at greater distance. It kicked less, is flatter, shorter in both length and heigth, reloads faster, more accurate(for me and the lady that owns it), has more power and more ammo. And I like the sights, trigger and over all feel alot better too. Carried each around in the pocket of my trousers a bit, and the Kahr feels better to me there too.
So, me thinks a Kahr is definately in my future...right after I get that nice Colt CCO in my possession at the end of the month!

You think the major reason is that the recoil impulse is lessened by the movement of the slide mass?

Just based on what I've read, the slide mass helps reliable functioning, but I think the secret of the soft recoil is the little "shock absorber" that is used for a recoil spring.

If I'm not mistaken, they pay a fee to Seecamp, in order to use that design.

Just my $.02.

So would you guys recommend a PM9 in addition to a 340PD? I just got a 340PD (get to shoot it this weekend) but almost got the PM9. My main carry gun is a G23, which holds twice as many rounds of a more powerful cartridge, but is not nearly as concealable as the PM9. I guess I feel like a 340PD, with its severely limited capacity and not so great sights (installing a Big Dot soon) is not a really good choice for primary carry unless the weather is really hot or I am jogging or something similar. It has been pretty well established that the 340PD is a better pocket gun, and I don't think I need to go as small as a P3AT just yet. But if I am going to get a smaller belt gun, why not just get a G26 or one of the "full-sized" polymer Kahrs?

Thoughts on the utility of having both? Keep in mind that getting the Kahr would mean new holsters and night sights as well, so it is about a $700 proposition. Luckily I have plenty of 9mm floating around.

Stiletto...

I'm thinking of getting Trijicon night sights on my "black slide" PM9 also. However, I'm pretty happy with the "bar and dot" white sights that it came with stock. I can pick them up pretty quickly.
Plus, (I've posted this before and it's my bad) but as I was walking down the row of glass cases in my regular gunshop, I came to an IMMEDIATE HALT in front of the PM9. Having just purchased another new J-frame a couple of weeks before from the owner/friend, he glides by, bends over the case, and in a whisper says, "Will, if you want that new PM9, you can have it for my cost". I went home with a new Kahr PM9 that very day for quite a bit less than $500.00. So, SHHhhhh--don't say I told. :) I just posted that to let you know that if you look around a little, I bet you can get what you want for less than $700.00.
:)
Oh, I forgot to say that a J-frame or Glock 27 was my former regular carry. It's now the PM9. The only reason is that the PM9 is SO much easier to carry than the Glock and has a little more punch than the .38 caliber J-frames. (However, a .32 H&R Mag AirLite Ti J-frame still rides on my ankle every day.) For the PM9, I bought a simple Galco "Belt Slide" holster (About $60.00) and a DeSantis "Nemesis" for pocket carry. (About $20.00) I'll probably keep the Galco belt slide, but the Nemesis will be replaced by a Hedley
"front pocket model" this summer.

Good luck,
KR
