Kahr triggers-safe for Mexican carry?

Hello everyone. I am new to concealed carry and evaluating several autoloaders for that purpose. I would like to know if the triggers on Kahr pistols are heavy/safe enough for Mexican carry or inside the pocket without a holster.

I don't think so. It was the main reason I sold my really nice MK9. The pull weight is slightly higher than Glock, but doesn't even stack at the end. Not very fumble resistant.

I had made a really simple leather IWB holster that used just a metal clip, that was okay, but thick. Maybe if I had used thinner leather?

The gun is so thin that I would have had trouble carrying Mexican anyway-would have ended up in my sock.

I wouldn't. There are too many inexpensive, quality holsters on the market that you can protect that trigger very economically & have that added measure of security.

My experience with it indicates no.

Now, my question is, why do you (or anybody) want to Mex. carry? There are plenty of thin holsters around if concealment is an issue, and if you spend the money on a good defensive pistol (which the Kahr is), why wouldn't you buy a decent holster to protect it?

I know this may sound disgraceful, but I do not want to strap on a holster to run to the store or get the mail. I have tried IWB with a G17 for the last couple of weeks and found that to be very uncomfortable. I don't want to buy several new pair of pants that are larger in the waist, either.

I have shot handguns for most of my life, but when you start to carry them concealed, it does change your life alot.

An uncle mike's pocket holster will cost you 8 bucks or so and will securely cover the trigger of the Kahr in your pocket without adding bulk or weight of any consequence at all. Helps break up the outline, stays in the pocket on a draw, etc. Others are available for only a little more if this one doesn't trip your trigger (so to speak).

At 8-9# trigger pull on your Kahr, you're probably not going to have it go off. Kel-Tec P-11s have trigger pulls in that range, and they have a factory available belt clip, which essentially makes them a "stay in place" Mexican carry pistol. Even their diminutive P-32 has a belt clip available, and their trigger pull is 5-6#.

Even if there was NO risk of an AD, why would you want to carry either of those ways?

You'd be risking:

1. The gun departing your waistband for parts unknown at the most inconvenient times, especially when you might need it.

2. The gun changing position so it wasn't exactly where you thought it was when you needed it.

3. The gun changing its muzzle orientation, which can be a real mess if you try to draw it from your pocket.

4. Your needing to rachet up your attention to the gun a few notches to keep track of it, which means you won't be able to pay as much attention to what you're doing in the first place.

5. The additional hazards to the gun itself from lint, sweat, and the other mung that's attracted to it.

No, it's not safe. Get a holster that covers the trigger guard. Do that for any gun y you carry, particularly those that do not have a manual safety.

Get a good paddle holster, and it won't be any more trouble than putting the gun in your waistband. Have a lightweight windbreaker on the coatrack by the door to grab on your way out and cover up.

You need to try a quality holster. One that is built for comfort. I carry a Kimber compact with a Sparks VM2 IWB and forget it's there. It is hardly thicker than the gun. It takes about 30 seconds to put on and I wear the same size pants when I carry or not. Usually jeans, which aren't exactly loose in the waist. To me it's worth the 30 seconds for the security of knowing the gun will not discharge or be lost while running or whatever. Kahr also sells a Alessi talon holster which clips in the waist band that I hear works pretty good also.

Have you considered using a pocket gun in a pocket holster? That way, you won't have to worry about "strapping up".

Blackhawk - statute is not real clear on that - says it has to be "in a shoulder holster, waist belt holster, any other holster, hipgrip, or any other similar device, in which event the weapon may be concealed by the person's clothing, or a handbag, purse, attache case, briefcase, or other closed container. Carrying on the person in a concealed manner other than as provided in this subsection shall not be permitted and shall be a violation of this Code section."

As far as I know it has not been litigated and a lot of people think that the statute precludes ankle carry. As criminal statutes are to be strictly construed against the state, I would say that the Kel-Tec clip is ok. But don't take my word for it!

I carry that way a lot and it serves me well. Very accessible.
I've never had any problems, but I don't carry cocked & locked either.
I carry both .45 auto's (chambered/decocked) and revolvers in this manner.

I'm with Handy. My MK9 spends a lot of time in the safe. I really wanted to like the MK9 but it's extremely light trigger pull and no safety make me nervous about carrying it with one in the pipe ... give me a cocked and locked 1911 over the Kahrs any time.

Don Hume ( www.donhume.com ) H715-M IWB clip on holster. Come on, it takes all of 10 seconds to put this one and it completely encloses the trigger. Holster runs around $30. I have one for each of my guns that I regularly carry. I consider holsterless carry to be very unsafe, particularly with a gun devoid of manual safties and wouldn't even attempt it.

It is simply untrue that NO gun is safe for Mexican carry. Arguably, a real DA trigger is a decent minimum, but how about a decocked gun with a deactivated or blocked trigger? (P7, decocked 1911, Beretta 92 on safe)

How could you accidentally set any of these guns off?

No gun is totaly safe to carry without a holster. No gun is totaly safe to carry with a holster either.

I carried my Kahr E-9 without a holster for a while but it was both unconfortable and not very secure.

The trigger is long enough that a simple bump of it won't make it go off (like a Glock) so I think you are O.K. with Mexican carry for short trips to get the mail or run out and fill your car up or what not.

People seem to be telling you not to carry if you don't have a holster but I say, try to carry your gun everytime you go out even if you can't be bothered to strap on a holster.

Carrying without a rig isnt something I recommend at all.
To much at risk...I once remember a thread on TFL where a guy wanted advice on carrying a Colt .380 Cond 1 in his front pocket...with non rig BA HA HA HA......:banghead: :banghead:
As far as a quick easy rig to not only keep your gun in and out of harms way...the 715 Hume is a good choice cheap, easy and nice.

As far as a 1911 in Cond 1 over a Kahr....neither is safer. The double safety on the Kahrs striker is as mechanically sound as the safeties on the 1911's sear/hammer.

I've carried IWB without holster a lot, with many different guns, including the Kahr P9. I prefer it in a holster, belt or IWB.

I will NOT carry a Glock without a holster, though--The trigger is just too tender for ME to be comfortable with that manner.

I have carried various 1911s without holsters for well over 30 years. My grip safeties are all active, though, and I make sure the thumb safety is up. The ones that make me nervous are those who lower a 1911 or Browning HP chammer to "half cock," believing this is safer than condition 1, and then cram the pistola into waistband without holster.
