Boy did my computer get fixed at the right time. My 10 year old son Keigan and I went hunting last night. This was the final night of the Kansas youth and disabled early deer season. I do beleive he got very very spoiled for his first deer. Keigan made a 178 yard shot with a t/c encore in .243 win. The 95 grain SST devasted both shoulders and took one lung and the front of the heart. With all that damage I am convienced the .243 is my new deer rifle. I am proud as heck of this deer my son took and the ability to be there when it happened. I think I was shaking twice and hard as he was. The 10 point buck weighed in at 324# before being field dressed. I was supposed to have been teaching hunter ed. Keigan was disappointed so when I got there and saw that plenty of instructors were already there. I happily bowed out glad I did.

Is it wrong to want to beat up a 10 year old?????????? Being where you are last year, Dad isn't that the best feeling in the world. Outstanding job to the both of you. We need more Dads & Moms like are on this site.

I can't help it here is a couple more pict's. Sure makes the little fork horn I took as a kid look small. I showed pictures to couple of my friends today and all they could say was. I hope you can live up to this expectation:D.
I would post a picture of my reaction but my smile won't fit the average computer screen.

congrats! excellent deer, good job w/ the patience to take your boy hunting and sit in a stand waiting for that perfect moment.

good lookin' boy, great buck (first, or any!), and by the pics the weather looks downright enjoyable. great day for you!

I could not beleive the amount of fat that was on this buck. That and the fact that he already broke a tip of a antler. I guess he had been busy tearing up my fence post and the nearby trees. My 8 year old Caleb told me that he is hunting next weekend. Well muzzle loader season is now upon us. I may load something down for him and get over to the range for practice.

thats an awsome Buck!!! congrats to the young man! and great shot! I think the first deer I killed was like 40 yards... Man I cant wait to get out this winter!!!

Please tell me your gonna get that beauty mounted.

How much did he end up butchering out to be (once all the fat was removed)??

Your son's smile says it all. Congrats. I think he's hooked.

I dropped it off to be mounted yesterday morning. Not quite sure how much he ended up butchering out to be. He took the shot about 7:30 or so that evening. After caping out and quartering. I had two ice chest pretty full of meat. I went to bed around 2:30 that night and had boned out most of it. Finished up yesterday after work.

Man that is so awesome all the way around - yeah, he's gonna be spoiled now.

But wait a sec, I'm pretty sure you're mistaken - the .243 is known in some internet circles to be wholly inadequate for large deer; must have really been a .300 maggie; you're puttin us on!

Congrats to you and your boy! I was about his age when I took my first deer. What was I using? .243!

Good shot, great deer and congrats to the young man, who is now totally hooked!! looks like he is smart enough to let dad get elbow deep in the blood,,err,,uh,,I'll just hold the legs,,great post

How much they charge in Kansas for mounting

I have a guy that does it as a hobby and does a very good job. He charges $250 for a mount. Keigan's was the first deer in this year. The taxidermist thinks he can have it in 7-8 weeks.

Keigan asked me earlier about doe tags. While we were hunting Sunday over the food plot behind the house. We had 22 does, 3 bucks including the one above and around 40 turkeys. All of the does were various shades of tan and gray. One doe came out and was a cool shade of almost crimson. Keigan wanted to shoot her at first. I told him that it was his choice but if he did he could not shoot a buck later this year. I asked him to hold off and see if anything else came along and that we could get a doe tag. I also told him that if he wanted that doe we would take her right before dark. Well he is now lusting after that crimson doe.

No he did not help feild dress that buck. I offered to let him cut the wind pipe but he declined. Although he did stay out with me while I butchered the deer. I would hand him a roast or a steak, it went into one bucket. The other went into the burger bucket. So he did get a little blood on his hands.

That's like going to your first rock concent and seeing a double-bill of Led Zeppelin opening for Pink Floyd! Now he's spoiled forever!

The neck on that thing is immense! Congrats to both of you!
