I managed to get my hands on a Kel-tec P17. This is the smaller lightweight 22 LR pistol with 16 rounds magazines. A gun range near me had two and I got one. It was the first time I saw it in stock anywhere. The other one sold the next day. $199 plus tax.

It comes with 3 magazines and a threaded barrel adapter. It is extremely light weight, but it does look cheap even for a Kel-tec. . Lots of big Allen screws holding everything together. The rear site is adjustable for windage and elevation.

I have put several hundred round through it with no issues for the most part. I have had misfires, but the primers had a good dent in them every time. I had some issues early on with some Federal Champion ammo, but I think some lead shaved off a couple rounds when they were feeding and gummed things up. Once I cleaned things out, it worked 100%.

I have shot 40 grain solids, 36 grain Federal HP, CCI standard velocity, CCI subsonic, and some CCI 45 grain Quiet ammo. All ran through the gun okay. The CCI Quiet ammo was with a suppressor which may have helped.

The 16 round magazines are easy to load with no tricks to loading them. They are double stack mags. You empty a 50 round box of ammo just loading the magazines. And you can dump that ammo downrange really fast.

One nagging problem I need to work on is the rear site keeps drifting to the left. The windage adjustment screw isn't very tight. I was planning to try some blue locktite on it.

The other issue came up last weekend: It has a small "slide bushing" that is small and falls out when you field strip. The recoil spring is around the barrel and this bushing sits on the inside of the slide and holds the recoil spring in. When you remove the slide, the bushing isn't held so it just falls out. I wouldn't recommend field stripping at the range unless you have a good table. I managed to lose that part in the dirt and am waiting to hear back from Kel tec on getting another one. I figure I am approaching 1000 rounds through the pistol and am dead in the water until I get that part. Kel-tec doesn't have parts or spare magazines on their site for this pistol yet.

Overall, the gun is mostly plastic like their other rimfire pistols. The slide rails are thin and the recoil spring is light which is normal for 22 LR. With all that, I can see how minor QA/QC issues or defects could cause bad reliability issues. But mine works well and seems to be a great plinking pistol. I am very happy with it.

Thanks for the review. I have several KelTec firearms and have excellent results with all of them. P32, P3AT, P11, PF9, PMR30, Sub 2000 Second Generation.

I was interested in one but ended up going with the Taurus tx22. Mainly because a local dealer had one but also seems very well built and the reviews were all positive. Seems like the keltec didn't review as well and had a few more issues. For the money though it seems like a decent pistol.

On the lost slide bushing in the 2nd to last paragraph, I emailed Kel tec and they said they would send me one for free. They said spare magazines are not available yet. Once they have spare parts and mags available, I will be happier.

There are a handful of small businesses that make a lot of money offering upgrades to Kel tec guns. I am curious what will be offered for this one (probably not until there are more out in the wild). Kel tec could do it themselves, but I think the low price is part of what makes this gun special.

On that note, I got a Ruger 70th anniversary edition Mark IV this year as well. That is a great gun, but it is twice the cost, heavier, and only 10 rounds. Since the P17 works well, it ends up being the better plinker. Looking at the P17 magazines, I think it would be easy for Ruger to modify their frames and offer a double stack mag if they wanted to. I doubt they will. It would be funny if Kel tec figured that out and sold high capacity Ruger clones.

Those aftermarket manufacturers will not offer much more than they already do. Probably new sights, maybe a +5 mag extension, an anodized aluminum trigger, a spring kit, simple stuff.

The Mark IV is a metal frame pistol, lot more money due to machining and the design for the Mark pistols has always used a 10 rd magazine and that's not going to change... ever. I don't like it either, I do wish I could get one of the 10 inch Mark IV's with a 15 or 20 round magazine, but I can't.

I've been holding out for the CP33, I really want a stupid high capacity .22 pistol and I really like everything they've done with that CP33. The way they have the rear of it designed it looks like a place a stock or brace attachment could be put, so I think that's coming. Just wish they'd skip the 16" rifle and make a 10 or 12 inch pistol instead as the .22 gets nothing more out of the extra barrel length.

I doubt Ruger will ever do a high capacity Mark IV either. If it happens, it will be one of the 3rd party outfits making a replacement frame.

I have seen the CP33 in a store once or twice.

Agreed, I handled one at a gunshow late last year. It feels a bit large for a pistol, but if you added a brace it would fit the micro-PDW niche quite nicely. I'm waiting for them to be out for a while before I buy one though. I like buying late Gen 1 Keltec, fewer issues to run into usually.

As to barrel length, the 22lr is still getting some benefit out of increased barrel length in terms of velocity/muzzle energy and lowering dB levels. Personally I like longer barrels on my firearms, and I often introduce new/younger shooters so noise and controllability are high on my priority list for any gun. I'm more likely to buy the rifle version of this "pistol", so hopefully Keltec will cater to both of us.

I've had my P17 for a month or so, now. It's been 100% reliable with the 8 - 10(+) different flavors of ammo I've fed it. Perfect platform for my .22 can. Got a cheap green laser and the pistol is an awesome range toy.

I have not seen a single P17 in any local stores around me to include the big stores like Bass Pro and Academy. Even the small shop I go to all the time has not had one. The Kel-Tec rimfire guns are hard to find/unpopular here in mid Missouri. I bought my PMR, CMR, and CP33 from the same small shop.

I have seen some the the first reviews of the P17 and it didn't;t look good. I think the negative reviews on the P17 are the same as the negative reviews for the Glock G44 - a couple of problems that keep getting circulated on the internet. Most of the posts on many different forums by actual owners all seem to be happy with the P17 (same as the G44)

When I bought my Glock G44 a few months back, no one had a P17 or any Taurus TX22 pistols. I was really wanting to compare all of them. I am very happy with my PMR 30, CMR 30 and CP 33.

Hop at The Firearm Blog did a review of the Kel-tec and was having a lot of problems. I recall parts falling off as well.

I read a few early reviews of the P17 and they weren't good, but the second wave were pretty positive. We got one in the shop and I bought it on the spot...didn't even think about using the employee discount. It has run great and I'm happy as APIS.

Correct, the first one he tested did have issues. The second one he received for testing worked just fine.
