Kentucky Baptist Convention uses gun giveaways to lure ‘unchurched men’

In Paducah Kentucky they are having a raffle to giveaway 25 guns. To enter the raffle all you have to do is to attend the church. The goal is to lure men to church, I think it will work. Wish they would something like that here.

I wasn't sure where to post this, maybe this should go in the legal or activism section instead?

"The Kentucky Baptist Convention is trying to bring “unchurched men” to Christ through free gun giveaways, its evangelical director said.

As many as 1,000 people are expected to show up at KBC’s “Second Amendment Celebration” at Paducah’s Lone Oak Baptist Church on Thursday, where attendees will be entered into a raffle to win one of 25 guns, The Courier-Journal reported."

.

Lone oak is known as a well-to-do church. They are pretty active and they think outside of the box. If it works...more power to them. I will not voice my opinion of the gun giveaway, but this is western Kentucky where guns outnumber people. I do know that they will be using an ffl to transfer their prizes.

Hey, why do they assume all us "unchurched" heathens are gun guys? Oh, wait...

An interesting bit of marketing, but I'd prefer to see a church meld firearms and charity in the spirit of community self defense; allowing lower-income folks to exchange some clothing for a firearm would be a powerful metaphor ;)

Oy Vey, "Preach the gospel and pass the ammunition." I literally heard that from one of my cousins who is an Evangelical Minister in the northern part of Georgia when we were all out on a property shooting while we sat around a picnic table loading up our mags (spot for shooting was some twenty five yards away and there was a rule about loose ammo for semis at the shooting spot, revolver ammo was fine to keep in one's pocket).

That's what I thought as I read the OP. Not the worst idea in the world. There is a certain loveliness to church hymns and prayer when done the right way which can fill the spirit with that which it had not before realized it was missing for when it concerns the unchurched individual. Still, while I keep a couple bibles (Old and New KJV) near the bed and a couple guns in a drawer near the bed, I don't know if this was the best use of resources or publicity. Makes all us southerners look like bible banging gun nuts. Which don't bother me at all really when it comes to those unmitigated yankee fools from parts of Massachusetts, New York City, New Jersey, and so on.

But I would fear deriding from those folks in the middle throughout the nation. But then again its Kentucky so I can't plum say if this is a good idea or a bad idea. Around here with all the yankee migrants it wouldn't play to well.

I think it's a great idea! I second the opinion that it should be spread out a bit though, at least broken out to 5 or 6 separate Sundays.

I've helped a few Church members this year get their CCW.
Nothing beats the peace of mind of knowing you have Jesus and a gun with you. :D

A guy told me when his daughter started dating he made her keep a New Testament in the car, between the two seat. I asked if he thought that made the kids behave any better and he said "I would think so. If that boy wanted to get from his side of the car to hers, he'd have to get past Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, ... first". :)

I'm not sure what this has to do with southerners, Kentucky is a Yankee state.

Apparently recruitment is more important than helping those in need. Imagine how many needy families could be helped with the cost of those guns.

No thanks, i'll buy my own guns and remain a reason loving heathen.

I can't help but feel there could be a better use for the money.

One in four Kentucky children experience food insecurity.

It has the highest cancer rate in the country.

It has the 14th worst public schools in the country. (I'd like to see children receive a proper education. Seems like it would solve a lot of political problems.)

Combating the current heroin epidemic.

Or to put it another way,

Matthew 25 said:
Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Talking about what other things they could have done with the money, consider the main goal of a Baptist Church (the name is a hint). Giving away guns may help them with their goal.

If it got a lot of new people in the door, even the second row may have been filled. :D (If you get that, you might be a Baptist :) )

Good one MtnCreek.

I'm sure we could all look at our own collections and say 'that could have gone to so many needy families', it's their money, let them do with it as they please.

Exactly what I was thinking

To have a better understanding of what they are trying to do, understand that they believe getting a new 'member' is saving someone from eternal damnation.

The bribes are getting better; it used to be the fried chicken that brought people in. :D

I'm skeptical. It seems to me that their main goal is to make a political statement and draw publicity. One would think that helping needy families would be a more effective way to draw people in while allowing them to reach more people.

Hey, cool, go to church and win a gun. If it works for car salesmen, it will probably work for churches.

But this is becoming more of a discussion about what churches should do with money and that's not our bailiwick.
