I was just reading about Kimber rifles (I'd love to own one some day...) and was wondering what the difference is between the 84M and 84L. Is it just the action? It looks like the 84M houses a shorter action, e.g. .308, 7mm-08 where the 84L houses a longer action, e.g. 30-06 and .270 WIN.

Is this the major or only difference? Thanks.

kimber rifles

the 8400 are for the 270, 300,325 Winchester short mag calibers

Kimber uses 4 different actions, 84, 8400, 8400WSM, and 84L.

The 84 is short action. Originally the long actions were 8400. There is also an 8400WSM which is actually a short action modified specifically for the WSM line of cartridges.

Very few people liked the 8400 action, the 8400WSM was fine since it is really a slightly modified 84. You just have to hold one of the 8400's to feel the difference, but the balance and feel just isn't right. It is still used for long action magnum rounds. The 84L is the newest action made for 30-06 size cartridges and they got it right this time.

I prefer 84m just because the short length matches the other smaller components of a Kimber action. 84l is a close second imo. I've owned 8400 s and they are the least desirable to me.
