I am conducting a short study/analysis for an upcoming article in one of the gun rags.

While I know of several that I discuss in my classes, I am sure that there are many that I am missing. If you have any information on or links to articles where a "tactical" rifle or carbine was used in private self defense, whether or not a shot was fired, please PM me the information or post the info below for everyone to see.

Thanks.

Heck I've used one once for that myself, if you include no shots fired. I'd bet there are hundreds.

Thing is, if no shots were fired there aren't likely to be any written records of the incidents.

Check past issues of American Rifleman, for "The Armed Citizen" column. Quite often, home owners use long guns because they are home, and that is what's available.

True, I completely understand that. Even when shots are fired it's not always publicized very well, which is why I'm asking for a little help.

If you, or anyone else, would like to share your true story, either here or via PM, I'd appreciate it.

For the record, I do not intend to include any identifying information or locations in my article, even if known to me.

If anyone would rather, I can also be messaged through my website at http://www.osagecombatives.com/contactus.htm ....just scroll down for a message box.

M. Ayoob had a couple in his gunfight articles for American Handgunner.
Once, a jeweler with an outlying shop near his house saw burglars in the store and went after them with rifle and SMG, shotgun and handgun in reserve. One dead, three very sorry.

Another, a gun company employee shot a road rager with a Ruger AC556. No doubt it was self defense but the hassle over his full auto was considerable.

Maybe you could find those in AH archives.

We had one case locally where a guy employed an AR in defense. Only problem was, he was not a solid citizen and was defending himself from the police department. One cop wounded.

A man's home surveillance video caught thugs pull up to rob his house. The home owner fired several rounds (I thought I remembered it being a rifle that he used) at the invaders who retreated.

Also check "the armed citizen" from the NRA magazines. They have lots of self defense news articles with sources listed. I can't think of any rifles mentioned off the top of my head but there may be some.

If I remember during the LA riots, a number of people in the Asian community showed themselves to be pretty adapt in using the .30 carbine to defend their businesses and families.

Well....early one bright spring morning, I had to shoot for my life against a black bear at my cabin door. He was coming, and no doubt about it. The .303 Jungle Carbine did the job in fine style at a range of maybe three feet, if that much, and I will SWEAR that there were at least three empty cases in the air before the first one hit the ground.

I was trained by the Canadian Army on the #4 Enfield, just a short while before this event, and I could REALLY motor with that action!

The bear died immediately with four solid hits, all vital-zone impacts, and then it seemed my knees didn't want to hold me up for a bit.

I've always had great affection for the#4/#5 Enfields, even before this happened, and the episode only increased my regard. That was 45 years ago, and it seems like yesterday.

My brother in law defended himself from a charging black bear with a muzzle loader he was using to hunt deer at the time.
He said it didn't drop immediately but was still charging him until it started to lose it and veered off and then dropped. It was a small one and he is lucky for that I think.
Not tactical sorry :/
