I am in the market for a double rifle chambered in 3" 500 NE and was looking at either the Krieghoff or the Merkel.

I am looking for any feedback, both positive and negative, on either rifle.

I am also open to any suggestions someone may have on other manufacturers in the same price range.

Thanks in advance for the input?

I have no firsthand experience, but I'm pretty sure H&H Hunter has been happy with his Searcy. As a matter of fact, I think this is him.

You might want to try asking in the rifle forum as it seems to get more traffic than the hunting forum. Maybe ask a mod to move it.

If your choices are only the the two mentioned, these area few things to consider.

The Kreighoff..

Nicely made rifle good overall quality.
Decocking safety both good and bad.
Overall fit and finish good.
Shape and appearance to each their own but I like it.

On the minus side.

Decocking safety is very safe, however it's also very stiff to operate if needed in a big hurry and especially with sweaty or bloody hands it could be a problem.

The decocking safety does not allow for ejectors. That is a deal killer for me no ejectors no rifle in my opinon. I won't own one. My experiences are that when one needs ejectors he needs them very badly.

The Krieghoff has a reputation of doubling after some use.

The Merkel,

A handsome rifle for the price.
It is available with ejectors.

Overall fit and finish is average.
I find them to look a bit cheesy especially the ones that come with that cartoon character engraving.
They are very front end heavy IMO and stiff to operate.
They are built on the same action as their shotguns whether this is good or bad I don't kow but it's something to consider.
I have been told that they tend to be pretty reliable.

Neither of these rifles are custom fit to you the shooter and are mass produced. I would rather have a custom fit rifle.

For the money there is no better working double than a Searcy. A chapuis is right up there as well.

This is my humble opinon only, it ultimatley boils down to what you want the rifle for and what you like and expect from your firearm.

Nico,

Yes that is my article... :) Couldn't you tell from the ugly dude behind the buff.. ;)

I was pretty sure it was you since I remember you posting that pic and story, but you never know.

Nico,

You are right about that. As a matter of fact that story was clipped off of Butches sight and posted on another hunting web sight with some guy claiming it was his story..I'm not kidding..Ain't the NET great?

Same thing as that monster Brown bear story that's been going around. That bear was shot by a hunter with a license who originally posted the story on another hunting web sight. It later became some fairy tale about a ranger and a 7MM and some dead guy.. :D :D And if you look at the picture of the partially eaten dead guy you can clearly see palm fronds in the back ground not exactley what you'd expect to find in coastal Alaska.

Classic...what did he say when he got busted?

He just disapeared and the whole thing was deleted. It later reapeared as look what "somebody sent me" on the same site. Also untrue. :)

I guess I should find it flatering. :D
