I just picked up a pretty nice 1880 (+/-) kukri from IMA. It cleaned up nice and feels good! Problem is, it came without a scabbard.

Now I'm torn: should I try to buy or make a traditional wood and leather scabbard or should I make a modern kydex scabbard?

I've never really cared for the bulky original scabbard design - I think that I'm nore likely to use the old blade if it is easier to carry.

But the tradition... .

Myself?
I can make about anything knife related.

But I couldn't make a passable 1880's wood & leather scabbard the way they made them then.

I would be tempted to design & make a front-break Kydex or leather sheath you could get it out of without going cross-draw, or hand over hand straight up strong side.

I am heavily involved in khukuris, and I really don't have much use for the traditional scabbard.

I usually make my own leather ones as I'm not big on kydex married to such an old school knife. They're pretty easy to make.

If you would like a professional one done, PM me and I can give you the names of some of the go-to guys that make some gorgeous and surprisingly affordable sheathes for the big ol monsters.

I'm going to try to make a kydex scabbard as a learning exercise. If I like it then that's the end of the process. Otherwise I'm going to try a built-up lauan and glove leather slim-line scabbard - sort of a skinny version of the original.

From there, who knows... .

I'd make a leather one, kydex is for modern stuff.

PS many of those knives have decent scabbards with poor belt loops. Thats no place for glove leather.

If that big Kukri isn't needed on your belt, ready to hand... You might consider the way I keep my big blades (scimeters up to 12" in length). These are working blades for me and just need to be kept nearby safely -not necessarily on my person, but would work just fine to keep any big blade in a backpack...

I simply take an old long sleeve shirt and remove the one of the sleeves. Lay it flat, insert knife blade, then fold the remaining half of the sleeve back over the blade then loosely wrap the doubled cloth around the blade until the blade is completely encased in the cloth. What you'll end up with is a blade that's perfectly protected and won't cut into anything -yet can be drawn just like it was in a scabbard....
