The poll asks do you think homeowners should have the right to fire a gun at criminals outside of their home?

Here's the story that goes with the poll.

February 17, 2004
Homeowner, Vandals Trade Gunfire

(North Las Vegas-AP) -- A Las Vegas homeowner traded gunfire with vandals stealing the tires and rims from his sport utility vehicle this morning.

No one was hurt, but authorities say the man's SUV, his home and at least one neighboring home were hit by bullets during the shooting on Grey Knoll Circle. (That's near Ann Road and Camino Al Norte.)

Courtney Hunt says he was awakened by his dog barking, and confronted the vandals, who shot at him before he shot back. Hunt shot again at the vandals as they drove away with three of his four expensive rims.

Police are looking for the vandals, and investigating whether Hunt should face criminal charges for discharging his gun in the street outside his home.

They did an update right on the news and the score was 93% to 7% for homeowners. One anchor said something to the affect of a warning for people to not mess with other people's property(I was very suprised and joyed to hear that, hope criminals will think twice before going on a person's property.) But I was not happy at all with what the lady anchor said though, she basically said that people should be scared of their neighbors and to watch out. :banghead:

Do that in New York State and you'd probably be in more trouble than the criminals! Ahhhh! I would so like to move away from here!

When I first heard this story they made no mention that the resident had been fired on first, only that he had fired on them. I thought he'd get charged for sure for using a gun to protect property, but it turns out he was fired on first. He did put a bullet in another house, so you kinda gotta watch that. Man, that's dangerous when you're firing down the street! :uhoh:

G/F and I discussed this last night.
I told her this isn't Texas (had to explain night-time property protection law I read about) and the guy should fire them up only if he was in fear for his life after lethal force was used against him... at that time I didn't know if they had, but being in NLV and stealing rims (spinners maybe?) from an SUV in a upper mid level neighborhood means young gangsta type more than likely, which means its also likely they had at least one gun each.
He may be cleared on shooting at the thieves but if a neighbor complains to NLV Police, get a charge on illegal discharge with subsequent dip into his homeowner's insurance policy.
He should switch from a handgun to a semi-auto shotgun w/ #4 shot for the neighbors sake... and start parking his car in his garage. Cause he's a marked man now what with gangsta pride/honor and all.

But I could be wrong.

"Police are looking for the vandals, and investigating whether Hunt should face criminal charges for discharging his gun in the street outside his home."

Beg pardon?

The THIEVES, not vandals, apparently fired at him first, and he's looking at being charged because he took steps to defend himself?

What kind of crap is that?

And, the poll is gone.
