I'm not sure how it works with the LC plant. Supposedly Hornady frontier is loaded by LC but with Hornady components. I wouldn't doubt at all that XM-193 isn't lake city. Id like to know how the contracts work.

Well now that Winchester is in control of LC and Winchester has been awarded the giant military contract, who knows what brass will be??
Brass can be head stamped with any name, and made by some other plant.

So is it LC or Win??

As regarding Hornady, I've never read of them using Lake City brass, (doesn't mean it might not have happened.) However, I have a good bit of Hornady brass here that is headstamped "Frontier".

Regarding XM193, this from Pew Pew Tactical:

Learn the confusing differences between Federal’s X and XM designations of their 5.56 ammo, as well as the differences between XM193 and XM855 rounds.

Federal 5.56 M193 vs XM193

XM193
In a nutshell, “M” by itself means that it meets military specification (mil-spec) while “XM” means it does not.

But just keep in mind that mil-spec is very stringent and even a small thing out of specification can lead to tons of ammo being rejected.

And overwhelming consensus/review is that XM193 is some fine shooting ammo. But for some sleep-inducing reading pleasure, you can check up the mil-spec standards of M193 for yourself.

Federal must have gotten so many questions that they put up a site that describes XM193. Emphasis is done by me.

XM193 product is first run, first quality product manufactured at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for Federal Cartridges and is made to Federal specifications typical for commercial ammunition.

All XM193 product is the same regardless of the sku or part number. (ie. XM193C is the same as XM193F, XM193CBP and etc … ) The only difference is the package configuation.

Sadly the page is now down (as of 2016) but here is the link (slow load) where I grabbed a cache of it from 2012 and a screenshot of the cache below.

Interesting pretty recent story about the Lake City Ammo Plant.

I have always liked LC brass regardless of who held the contract. A little history:

"Remington Arms operated the plant from its inception until 1985, when operations were taken over by the Olin Corporation. From April 2001, it was operated by Alliant Techsystems (ATK), later known as Orbital ATK after a 2015 merger between Orbital Sciences Corporation and parts of Alliant Techsystems. Orbital ATK was acquired by Northrop Grumman in 2018 and is now known as Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems. Starting in October 2020, Winchester Ammunition was selected by the US Army to operate and manage the Lake City Plant".

The above quote taken from the Wikipedia. :) Northrop Grumman is a key player within the Department of Defense as I worked with quite a bit of their stuff the last 25 years of my career with Navy Nuclear Program.

Great article.

The last 10-years before I retired, I was primarily involved in major risk assessment and major accident investigation for a global company. The majority of our findings would involve management issues and especially the lack of a top-down driven policy. Rarely would we find an individual solely responsible for a major accident.

Oh, I can believe that alright. Management kicking back and NOT managing a thing! Yeah, I've definitely seen that, along with a lot that are not even qualified to manage...
