Last month I went trap shooting for the first time. Simply put, I LOVED it.

I purchased a Mossberg 500 for the task and it performed quite well. My best string was 18 out of 25. I won't tell you what my worst was  However, I did end up with a nice lump under my right eye. One of the more experienced shooters there informed me that I was putting my face too close to the stock.

Anyway, I now find myself wanting to purchase an O/U to try my hand at sporting clays. CDNN has the Lanber 85 for $300. Is that a good O/U beginner gun? How does it compare to the cheaper EAAs at CDNN?

Or should I spend some extra cash to get something of better quality? I am 6'2", 260# and my arms are fairly long. A few of the guys at the shoot told me I may have problems finding an off-the-shelf gun that fits me properly.

Cheap guns tend to not hold up under the pounding a target shotgun gets for long. Lanbers get good ratings as field guns, and the midgrades seem fairtomiddlin' target guns, but I think you'll want something else soon if you get this.

Right now, you've got what you need, a good reliable shotgun. Get the fit right and BA/UU/R. It won't be your last shotgun, and it's enough.

As for the stock, I also am 6'2"(at least in the morning), 260, take a 36" shirt sleeve, and find the stock stock workable if a little short for T shirt shotgunning.

Hit the patterning board (Literally) and adjust as needed in increments of 1/16-1/8" at a time. Once dialed in, so to speak, go shoot.

Later, when what you shoot at gets destroyed almost all the time and in short order, get whatever you fancy. Good used B-gun O/Us start about a grand, and are excellent quality.

HTH....

I just asked the same question. BA/UU/R == "Buy Ammo, Use Up, Repeat."

Fish.
