I've got two large ring Mauser sporter profile barrels. They are marked as being .270 caliber. The breech faces are marked "R" with some other squiggly mark on it.
Anyone have any ideas on who the original barrel maker was?
It looks to me like a military stepped barrel that was turned down to make it look like a sporter barrel. Nothing wrong with that at all if the rifling and bore are good. Those are likely makers marks done with metal stamps and a hammer by the smith who did the work once upon a time. It was not an uncommon practice back in the day for the artisans to do so. The real question now is who did the work? I'm sure that someone else will chime in here with more knowledge on the subject.
I'd be suspect that it may have come off of an old import rifle that was sporterized which wouldn't surprise me either.
Now the detective work has begun. It'll be like trying identify an old livestock brand from the old west.
