Two days ago, while listening to Lars Larson, I heard him discussing (with his guest) the various qualifications, attitudes, and positions of Rudy Giuliani.

I heard the guest say something that sounded an awful lot like "Giuliani is a strict constitutionalist." There was no way to call in where I was, so I fired off an email to Lars.

Imagine my surprise when I got an actual response!

I was pleased he took the time to read what I wrote, and even more pleased that he aired it.

Here's the conversation:

Lars,

I'm listening to your program right now, listening to your guest defend Rudy's position as "conservative and strict constitutionalist."

OR NOT.

Giuliani seeks to disarm the common citizen.

A strict constitutionalist would support the Second Amendment.

He does not.

There are (conservatively) 80 million gun owners in this country.

Rudy doesn't seem to want those votes, or seeks to fool them with rhetoric that promotes "common sense" gun laws. There really is no such thing. Keeping arms out of the hands of the law-abiding does absolutely nothing to disarm the criminals.

Maybe he figures it's smarter to appeal to the Blue State voters.

A politician who feels it's "smarter" to seek the votes of those who feel it's the government's job to take care of them is not standing on principle.

For me, and for many, "gun control" is a make-or-break issue.

The government and police cannot protect the individual citizen, and pretending that they will -- or even can -- is dishonest.

Rudy supports disarming the common man.

That's a bad thing.

Yesterday, I got this reply.

Well, howdy-do!

Gettin' the message out on the air!

I'm kinda tickled. Hat don't fit.

Lars has stated on more that one occasion that he carries. He's in our camp and often says so on his show. He's also an avid hunter.

my lack of enthusiasm for ghoulinanni

is already generating friction with my blue state LE side of the family.
NY'ers think he is a conservative:barf:

He is conservative, by New York standards. A Texas Democrat is a lot more conservative typically than a New York Republican.

That's the beauty of Federalism. The Fed.Gov just manages things, and leaves the state governments, more in tune with the whims, desires, values, and needs of their citizens, to set policy that effects said citizens directly.

Too bad our government seems hell-bent on abandoning federalism and instead letting a few chuckleheads in Washington tell people in states they've never been to how to live. *sigh*

I hope to heck Rudy doesn't get the nomination.

Good on you, Arfin. Pull on a snake's tongue till it pops and you'll get the truth.

Biker:)

One of the most aggressive gun control advocates today is Republican mayor Rudolph Giuliani of New York City, whose administration sued 26 gun manufacturers in June 2000, and whose police commissioner, Howard Safir, proposed a nationwide plan for gun licensing, complete with yearly "safety" inspections.

Rudy G. reminds me of the fabled Tom Noguchi, Los Angeles's "Coroner to the Stars." Noguchii's fantasy was to see himself on tv, doing an interview, with the flaming wreckage of a 747 behind him for high drama. Rudy G. has made a career out of one historic day with the wreckage of the World Trade Center behind him. Let's concede that he acted ably that day--I can't separate the reality from the hype--but so would many other people have. To raise Rudy G. to the status of mythic action-figure, part of the oppressive celebrity cult that has swallowed up America's brains and soul, is absurd in the extreme. As Hillary is "the smartest woman in the world," though no one can quite say why, Rudy G. is the noblest Roman of them all--though no one can quite say why (except maybe the squeegee men).

When you remove the pedestal you get the grim reality: Rudy G. is another metro-leftist who wants to reduce our civil rights "for the greater good."

No way.

Lars is my favorite conservative talk show host by far. He doesn't insult people like Rush, etc. He is just common sense. Yes, he carries...a Makarov last time I checked. ;) There is a public access channel in the Portland area where you can see him in the studio during the show.

ooooh longeyes! that was sublime!
