Carrizo Creek Range near Jacumba needs a cleanup badly to avoid suffering the fate of just about every other open shooting area in San Diego County. It's been schedueled for May 19-20 Check out the website for more details. And join the SDShooting Yahoo group to keep up with shooting-related items pertinent to the San Diego area!

Yeah, that place REALLY needs to be cleaned up. I try and pick up at least as much brass as I shoot, and my friends do the same. We also clean up our targets (the occasional piece of fruit notwithstanding) and try and take away a bit more than we brought.

Still, when you see the same piece of steel or washing machine has been sitting there for 6 months, you gotta wonder...(we don't have the equipment to take out the heavy stuff).

Having said that, an organized project really is the way to go.

As for your shooting competition, be advised that the wind out there is WICKED, and unpredictable. It's almost not worth sighting anything in up there. Also there will probably be a large border patrol presence. Don't freak out: They're there to catch the illegals coming across, but do be careful. We've had their helicopters cross right over our line of fire (coming over the hill/berm) at a fairly low altitude more than once. Can't say that I think very highly of their pilots' intelligence, but do check your fire, as the last thing we need is a shot up border patrol helicopter to close down the range.

I'm going to try and make it out there for the first day, I've already got family commitments that sunday.

One day is orders of magnitude better than no days :)

If I could get a visa I would come... :)

BTW why is it that most of the litter appears to be used shotgun shells?

Is it because the rifle guys tend to reload?

Hey I lived in the US leagally and bought a couple of Corvettes and a Viper... etc. But when I got laid off had to leave in 30 days or be tagged by Immigration... that is life.

I try not to break the rules of host countries that I live in.

The reason it's funny is that the shooting area is right up against the US/Mexico border. There is a fence, but it's full of large gaps. Illegal border crossers stroll through the shooting area in question every night.

Anyway, thanks for obeying our laws, but I wish you were still here in the US. We need more good people here.:)

Armed Bear,

It's not just at night. Last time I was out that way, one of the other guys out there commented that they had to call a cease fire one time, when three guys hiding in the bushes UP ON THE BERM came out with hands up, screaming. From some of the shooting areas, an airsoft gun held perfectly horizontal could cross the border.

As for the shotgun shell litter, I have a few ideas on that. A lot of people pick up their own brass, and the locals (there are locals) scavenge the brass that gets left behind (talked with a few of them last time out). That eliminates the lion's share of centerfire pistol/rifle ammo casings. This is kinda dumb, in a way, becaues the shotshells are a LOT easier to find, lying on the ground, or at least, would be, if the ground wasn't covered in 3 layers of them to begin with. Hell, we find lots of unfired ordinance on the ground up there each time we go. Actually, that's something the cleanup crew might want to bear in mind: There is a fairly good amount of unfired ammo lying on the ground, some of it perfectly capable of being fired/set off. Be careful. Finally, a lot of the people who shoot their shotguns there are shooting clays/beer bottles/etc, and don't care what crap they leave behind to begin with (else they wouldn't be shooting non-biodegradeable clays).

Just make sure the border patrol knows what you guys are doing in advance, and doesn't think you are digging tunnels.........heh

Most of the shotshells are unreloadable junk.

Occasionally, I see STS or AA hulls, but not often.

A long-term solution would involve having somewhere to dump the garbage.

I pick up other people's hulls when I go hunting. But out there, it's a lost cause.

Maybe I'll bring a rake and a bag or two next time. Anyway, I'll try to make it for the trip.
