I had a S&W 637 Airweight .38+P and now have a Ruger LCR .38+P. I forgot just how stiff the trigger was on the Airweight until I fired my buddies the other day.

IMO the Airweight is prettier. The LCR better trigger, every thing else about equal.

Your Opinions Please?

I held a 638 and the LCR side-by-side when I was shopping for a new CCW gun a couple months ago, and chose the 638. The LCR may have a better trigger, but it felt like a toy in the hand. The 638 actually looks and feels like a real gun.

The weight difference is insignificant, imho, and I'm willing to bet that I won't notice the crappy trigger when/if I need to use it in a "social situation". ;)

If the airweight is an older pre-lock-pre-mim than definately the airweight. If it is a current production with the lock than definately the Ruger. If it was either current production, or early mim production without the lock, I would have to compare the two guns in question side by side and compare triggers. If that was not an option then I would go with the Ruger.

I like my 638 and have never shot the Ruger. I don't mind plastic guns. My decision was made easier when the dealer had the S&Ws in every hammer type but the LCRs all had CT grips already installed for an additional $175. I might still get an LCR but not because there is anything wrong with the 638.

I voted Other; I would choose the 638 and would try to find one pre-lock. I do like the LCR for a slim boot grip that they offer; it is smooth, hard plastic and would be better for CCW in my opinion. The LCR also has a much better trigger than the current S&W pistols. If I needed one tomorrow, it would be the LCR.

How many live rounds + dry fire cycles does that 637 have on it? Just curious, the trigger on my 642 was a bit stiff when I first bought it. But after cycling the action about 1,000 times and cleaning out/relubing the internals, the action smoothed out noticeably. As smooth as the LCRs I've handled, and I actually prefer the firmer trigger return on my 642 (the LCR's return felt a bit mushy to me). But YMMV.

My sister purchased the new S&W Bodygaurd .38 last month. The trigger on it feels lighter than my 642, but it is certainly grittier. It works for her though, her first five shots landed into a 3" group at 7 yards!

I tried both a couple S&W type snubbies and the early LCR before they came out with a real boot grip. The LCR shot the best. not so hot in the looks department, but if every gun I had came with a trigger like that gunsmiths wouldn't have to do trigger jobs for me anymore. 8)

I think my vote is "other .38+p". I went with a lockless S&W 442 and a trigger job.

Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion. This one happens to agree with mine...

;)

Ummm, the choices are Ruger LCR .38+P, S&W Airweight .38+P and Other .38+P but I see posts calling the M638 and M442 an "Other .38 +P". I don't get it, the M438, M442, M637, M638 and M642 are all Airweight J frames.

I chose "other" because the OP mentions the trigger problem, but the poll doesn't. The trigger would keep me from buying a J-frame and that seemed to be a crucial criteria for the OP as well.

I have a S&W Model 637-2 complete with lock, MIM parts and all the other "boogeymen." Mine has had somewhere north of a thousand rounds through it and the trigger is quite good - better (IMHO) than the LCR I tried and far better than the SP101.

I've owned and carried both the 642 and the LCR. I still own the LCR, with the aforementioned boot grip and XS standard dot. Reasons- trigger is much better, and it didn't cost me significantly more to have the awesome boot grip (Concealable and nonsticky, but comfortable and surprisingly easy to grip) and the XS sight.
