I was in a small junk shop today and saw some ingots marked lead. A round disc of lead that came out of someone's melting pot was also nearby. The ingots were a strip of squares still connected to each other. I don't know what it was, but it wasn't lead. Fairly soft, could scratch with my pocket knife, but not my thumbnail. It was kind of shiny and went "ting" when struck. Could it have been tin? The owner didn't know, he thought it was lead. I didn't buy it, just curious. I did buy the disc though.

Any alloy containing a small percentage of tin or antimony is going to ding when dropped on concrete. It was probably someone's bullet alloy. If the price was right, you should have purchased it.

The only problem would have been if there had been some zinc mixed in with it.

Hope this helps.

I should have thought of that, didn't even cross my mind.
If I get back there in a week or so, I'll see if he still has it. It was only $5.

For $5.00, you can't go wrong. I was told that lead is $1.23 a pound on the market right now, if that helps you make a decision. I just returned from the SHOT Show and that was the price quoted to me by MT2, one of the largest lead reclaimers in the business.
