What is the least expensive 5o BMG rifle out there? Is it worth having?

I am interested but would like to try to stay under 1500 for the base rifle.

I have not shot one or seen one in person. :neener:

Now I am curious about this gun also, if its of decent quality, I may get it instead of dropping 3 grand on the barret like I planned in about a year. anyone know anything about the quality of this rifle?

I would pass on the Hesse 50 or Vulcan Arms (whatever the hell they are calling themselves these days). Spend the extra money and get a Serbu BFG, great gun and the guy who builds them actually cares about quality.

The groupbuy going on awhile back was a great deal, but Serbu's prices are still very fair regardless.

$2200 and you're in

LAR Grizzleys are around the same price as the Serbu. Also a very well constructed piece of gun. :)

You couldn't PAY me to shoot that Hesse/Vulcan Arms gun. With their track record.....it's just not worth the risk. JG is right, spend the extra cash on a Serbu and know you are getting a good gun. May also want to look into the Ferret .50 AR uppers.

I am somewhat interested in the AR upper models, but at the same time, I am not. Many questions...do you have to unscrew a threaded bolt? How well does the system hold up over time? Things like that. I may wind up with a Serbu even though I like the AR concept.

They certainly are and definitely aggressively priced, but the LARs are known for having punishing recoil (when compared to other light 50s). If someone was to put an AR50 brake on one that would most certainly make it better.

Also, the LAR is a shell holder design....the BFG is a true bolt action. This is obviously subjective and up to the shooter what they prefer.

There's a company, Republic Arms - not sure if that's the right name, I know they made the Patriot 45ACP pistol. I looked at one of their 50s a few gunshows ago and was very impressed. It was nice and heavy. The Serbu seems like a solid product.

Never played with the LAR and though I've never handled the Hesse either, I'm afraid. I guess the internet anti-hype effected me on that one.

For the 50BMGs worth? I think it would be awfully darn cool to have one, plus I'm sure a good quality one is only going to go up in value, probably banning new ones before too long. I think $1,500 is about $500 to $700 below the really good products.

I shot a LAR monday, I thought the recoil was pretty mild actually. I even shot it free hand. So if LARs are considered punishing, I've got to check out some of those other 50s! :D (heck I want to shoot them all).

I will say this and only this in Hesse's defense, there is one guy that owns one and posts on Biggerhammer. So far he has a few hundred rounds through his and hasn't had any problems yet.

Steve,
Watson's Weapon's makes the .50 upper for the AR that you have to screw the bolt in and out to load and unload it. The Ferret50, ALRS and the MMAG are all true bolt action types uppers for the AR lower.

Get the Serbu, you will not be dissapointed.
In my opinion it's the best, most affordable and most accurate
.50 package there is. Takes a nice photo too.

ps hey Shawn please email me the desert dates:p
