I'm having issues with my lee trimmer system. When I chuck up the case in my drill and insert the stem attached to the cutter, the piece of the stem that fits in the flash hole is touching the chuck and keeping the cutter from trimming at all. Should I take a grinder and cut that piece down a bit or just assume that is how it works and when the cases are stretched enough it'll be long enough to trim? Appreciate any advice.

First thing you should do is measure the case and see if it is already too short and doesn't need trimming.

I would not do any grinding on anything, until you find out that very important piece of information first.

The center pin of the Lee trimmer is the length gauge. It is supposed to come up against the chuck. As long as that pin is completely turned in to the cutter, it is the correct length for your shell. If it is correctly inserted into the shell, through the primer hole without cutting the shell edge, the shell does not need trimming. It is within spec. The Lee trimmer only cuts those shells that are longer than spec and can not cut them too short.

Probably I shouldn't ask this question.

But you did size & deprime the cases first didn't you??

If there is still a primer in the case, the depth pin can't go through the flash hole to do what it does.

Rc- that is a good question, but I have deprived and sized before trimming.
Splatter- thanks for the advice. All of my cases have been well within spec and they will have to stretch considerably before they will need any trimming.

I've been using the Lee case length trimmers for over 25 years. You can't beat them for price and accuracy. Nice thing is there is no adjustments that can get out of whack and you don't need to go measure mad.

Got a good set of calipers? You should do some measuring to see where you're at.

... and where you are going. Check the length of the last piece of brass trimmed to the first or if you are smart check more frequently. These trimmers CAN trim cases "too short"

They used to be made with a "Hardened Steel Stop Pin" which "Will Retain Its Accuracy Forever", but newer packaging has been changed to a less deceptive "Steel Stop Pin Will Retain Its Accuracy Forever", presumeably after customer feedback
