Left Eye Dominant

I have a few ways of dealing with this, dont know which one I use more often (second nature), and I probably use a combination of them depending on my shooting position.

Move pistol a few inches to the left and use my left eye.

Tilt pistol to the left at to about 15 to 20 degrees, or tilt my head the other way about the same amount, and use my left eye.

Tuck my chin into my right shoulder, and use my left eye.

Longarms get fired from the wrong shoulder. If he's already shooting longarms, making the transition from righty to lefty isnt that bad. After I made the switch it started making more sense to me to have my strong hand controling where the muzzle goes - and of course I started shooting groups instead of patterns.

I can target with my right eye, but it takes a lot of concentration for me to switch eyes. I do practice weak hand, moreso with my AR than I do pistols. Oddly enough, in my right hand, I'm a much better shot with a 1911 than I am a glock. In my left, I shoot the glock better than a 1911. Go figure.

This is how I do it

To check for eye dominance make a triangular hole using your two outstretched hands. With hands outstretched all the way, look for a distant object and center it in the hole. Now slowly bring your hands back toward your face while keeping the object in the center of the hole. When your hands touch your face your dominant eye will be looking through the hole as it was the entire time. Do this several times to make sure you are not one of those people that doesn't have a dominant eye, (you would get different results). Most have a dominant eye and will get the same results every time.

Test

hey there:
Your test works fine and always has. BUTTTTTTT,
Now do the same thing and focus on said object with the other eye. Repeat the test and you will find that in very short order you can change the dom, eye focus. This is why I said it can be changed and you can adapt .

I see what you are saying. I put my hands up and closed the dominant eye, put an object in the hole, and then opened the dominant eye and continued to keep the original object in the hole as I pulled my hands in. Thus forcing the non dominant eye to remain dominant for a short time.

However, trying to change my dominant eye scares me.

I am afraid that I will end up switching eyes at random. For instance, right in the middle of sighting a target. When I put the gun up and on target I want to know which eye I am using every single time. I am not saying that with a lot of practice I couldn't MAKE the right eye dominant but I am skeptical. Has anyone had great success doing this?

i gotta go with 10-ring im that way i shoot handguns held in right hand but use left eye and rifles i shoot completely left handed

I am right handed but have a cataract in my right eye. Therefore I shoot handgun cross-eyed. Son in law asked, how do you do that? I said, If you live long enough you'll learn how.

Most.

Hey there:
I am left eye dom also. I shot IPSC for years. That can be a fast paced game.
Switching eyes , or left hand to right hand can get confusing fast. Finding your next target is very hard to do when one eye is closed. Onec in full swing of the game the dom, eye thing is not an issue. Scoped rifles really help make the change over. I used a scope on my AR-15 in our Rattle battles and found that fast shooting with no time to think about the dom, eye thing will make the change for you. The more the dom, eye is worry'd about the more of an issue it becomes. The less it is considered the less of an issue it becomes.
Slow fire hand guns is were it is noticed the most. And that is where the concern comes in. I was not being a wise guy by saying don't think about it.

The "El Presidenta" ( if spelled right) is a stage in IPSC, one that sooner or later is required. The shooters that worry about the dom, eye thing do not shoot well at all in that stage. I know I was one and one old boy finally said ,"Don't think about it" ..... he was right. I also found that shooters with the dom, eye worrys tend to have and use more expensive scope s on their rifles.

Back when I started shooting, I don't remember anyone thinking about eye dominance.

One picked up the handgun, or the long gun, and shot it.

Soon, your body and your eyes told you which side and which eye is right for you.

For me, rifle lefty, handgun righty. It works for me.
