i've been trying to decide on a laser rangefinder for a while. i've narrowed it down to the leica crf1000 and the vortex ranger 1000.

i recently bought both ( being able to try them side by side and return the one i don't want for a full refund). price point difference between the two is $20.

my uses are mostly for practice (both just ranging things and checking against the lrf, and range use), hunting (although i'd be hard pressed to get a shot much over 300 yards on whitetail, and i don't currently bow hunt), and just to have another tool in the toolbox.

i've been playing with both all day, and i can say they both are practically equal in terms of actual ranging. both range almost all the targets the same within a yard. i say almost because once or twice, one wouldn't read a target that the other would. both have recorded targets out past 1000 yards with 1082 being the longest target for the vortex and 1106 being the longest for the leica.

here are the differences that matter to me...

the vortex...
fantastic lifetime warranty
angle compensation feature, and will read LOS and measure the angle if desired
feels better in hand though almost too small

the leica...
much better display and glass
possibly more precise (though it doesn't really show in practice)

the vortex is shorter in length than my palm is wide, meaning that although it feel great in hand, when steadying it with both hands, sometimes i seem to be partially blocking the objective lens. not a big deal, but present. it also has a more cluttered display due to the features. the reticle and readout are thicker and seem to "flare" a bit more. the glass is pretty clear and sharp but has the slightest blue tinge to it. great warranty is a plus. i have other vortex optics and have been totally happy with there performance. not sure i need the angle features, as i don't currently bow hunt and it won't matter much for my terrain with a rifle under 300 yards. readings take a bit longer both in three buttons presses (vs 2 in the leica) and the length of time it takes to process. not that bi of a deal though.

the leica is pure joy to look through! bright, clear, and sharp! i wouldn't say "night and day" against the vortex, but noticebly better. the reticle is probably about perfect in overall size, thickness of the stadia, and brightness. it's not cluttered at all, and just plain easy on the eyes. the eye cup makes for better eye relief, however the rubber doesn't seem as nice as the vortex. readings are faster as well.

both are water proof within reason. both have a decent case, neither of which is perfect, but both are adequate. both are lightweight and easy to carry. i don't see myself using the pocket clip on the vortex, so that doesn't really enter the equation.

so, there you have my initial thoughts on these two. anyone with experience with either, or both? which one did you go with and why? which do you think is the better fit for my needs?

Fella's;

I'm also going to be real interested in the comments on this one. My old rangefinder has bit the dust & I need a new one.

One thing I noticed when a friend & I were checking his Leica & my old Bushnell side by side, was that the Leica couldn't read a red stop sign. But, keep in mind that this was probably eight years ago or so.

I've had my Leica about a year now and performance has been flawless. Clarity is breathtaking and it makes me want a Leica scope.

cb900f, i don't hunt the elusive red stop sign, so i'm not sure that's a concern for me;)

seriously they both are still neck and neck. but i guess it boils down to does one value the angle features and warranty over the leica's superior optics.

i'm not sure i do and am leaning more towards the leica. i'll take them out again tomorrow and hopefully be able to make a decision soon.

decided to keep the leica. had them both out today for a while and the leica seems a bit more accurate in several ways.

it was able to range a few shrubs at distances of 950-1050 yds that the vortex wasn't. i was also able to get readings on distant targets at 700-900 yds between trees and shrubs in the foreground, whereas the vortex kept wanting to read the shrubs and tree canopies. this is possibly due to the leica reportedly having the smallest beam divergence of the sub $1k rangefinders. i can't find a published beam divergence on the vortex.

they seem to range within a one or two yards of each other on just about every target i tried. i decided to measure a distance of 90 ft (30 yds) and have my friend stand at the end of the tape. the vortex read 29, the leica 30. by this point i had pretty much decided on the leica, and this confirmed my choice.

the vortex is a nice range finder and may serve someone better who values the added angle features. but for me, the screen is a bit cluttered, the reticle too large, and it just wasn't nearly as nice optically.

there you have it.

Whether this matters to you or not, you will likely be able to sell the Leica for much closer to the price that you paid for it, as compared to the Vortex, years from now. It's even possible that you could get more.

BTW - where did you find a Leica CRF 1000 for (I'm extrapolating) $380? I just picked one up for $407 with shipping and I have to agree that the optics are superb.

At the end of the day, I can do my own angle compensation, but nothing I do will make a display brighter or clearer and I've looked through cheap/dark optics enough times to know it makes a difference.
