I've seen a few revolvers in Dallas. Most are worn by officers who I can't comment on here, but who impress me as not having any sort of gun backgrounds and who probably bought the gun cheap from someone else.

Not on the Dallas Police Department in the last decade. DPD issues the SIG 226 or 239. Personal purchase can be 226, 229, 239 or 232 (backup only). Glocks are grandfathered for pre 2001 hire. No revolvers.

I think the city security force also uses the Model 64's once used by DPD

The who what? City security force? What is that?

Last cop I saw with a revolver was the county sheriff, S&W 66 or 686. Couple years ago riding a horse in a parade.

During a recent holiday trip in Spain I noticed that some local police officers use revolvers as duty guns. They carry them in leather holsters with a classical ammo belt. Most guns are .38 Spl. but I saw some .357 Mag. too.

Seem to remember a lot of the security at the Smithsonians having revolvers last year... Caught my attention because you don't see that every day, especially in the majority category.

I am a LEO. I carry a j-frame .38 +p for a backup. I also have a .357 magnum snubby I qualified with that I will carry on occasion as well. If someone is on me or I have to grab it with my support hand, I don't want a safety to worry about or a slide that can go out of battery.

As far as primary pistol goes, I knew a few. VERY few. One of them just retired. I never got a good look at his revolver. He was LAPD. I would guess it was a 38 S&W, since LAPD did not have 357 authorized. If you see it, you'd think, "Wow, that thing has been around." Another one I knew carried a Stainless Steel S&W 38.

When I asked around in Los Angeles area, about 60~70% of the police academy graduates were buying revolvers as their back-up about 5~6 years ago. Others would choose a Glock 26 or something like it.

However, that seen some change recently. I see many of them dropping the 38 snubbies for 380ACP pistol.

I see popularity of snubbies dwindling down as a police backup, although I don't see it going away.

First reason is that many cops use the backup as off-duty weapon, and pistols like Glock 26 offer much more in that regard. Combine it with their duty weapon, then they even see a benefit in the ability to use 17 round Glock 17 magazine. Same with M&P and M&P Compact combo. For vast majority of cops, this is much more pragmatic approach. As long as they're proficient with a full size Glock or M&P, they can expect reasonable hit with their compact version too. With a revolver as a back-up, it would need more dedicated training.

As far as hiding it and comfort goes, pistols like Ruger LCP beats snubbies.

I saw a Jefferson County (Colorado) Sheriff's Deputy at a convenience store last year. He had a cocked & locked 1911 as his primary, but the funny thing was the small belt slider with 6 rounds of .38 special (probably the Speer 135 gr GD) on his right front hip. I asked him if those were for his BUG and he responded in the affirmative.

In DC, armed private security officers are called "special police", and almost every single one of them carries a revolver. DC law is silly like that.

I know a guy who's an auxiliary deputy with the local sheriffs department, he carries a S&W model 60 full time. I believe it's got something like an inch and seven eighths barrel, I know its less than 2.5".

FWIW the "armed security" at the Smithsonian are Smithsonian Police with full police powers. Federal Protective Service Police are at National Archives. Capitol, Park Police, Printing and Engraving, National Zoo, FBI and Supreme Court Police are some of the agencies in DC along with DC Metro Police. More police agencies in DC than any other city.
