Okay, I see that alot of citizens carry BUG's. My question is, how many of the LEO's here (current or retired) carry or carried a BUG while on duty?

What kind, and was it kept in a pocket or ankle holster?

Also, if you were in a rural, medium, or large city?

Was a BUG recommended by the department? Or did you have other reasons for having one while on duty?

Sorry for all the questions, I just got really curious and figured it could make for a decent thread


Also, did you have a long gun in your car while on duty?

Walther PPS. BUGs allowed under dept policy but were not an issue item. Private purchase BUG had to pass armorers inspection and conform to some policy restrictions.

Carried one for the simple and obvious reasons that a lot of officers are killed with their own weapon. Also carried it such that I could access it even if I couldn't reach my holstered primary on my gunbelt in a ground fight and similar.
 
I carry one whenever in uniform. Personal gun, but have to qualify with it every year. I carry it in a belly band up under my arm pit like a shoulder holster, sorta.

Revolver or semi, pocket or ankle depending on the season/weather.

Rural.

No issue backup, but it must meet the dept specs. Must qualify annually (ammo not provided by dept).

A normally reliable piece of equipment will break at the most inopportune time. A job that requires the carrying of a firearm is probably dangerous enough that an extra firearm (like a little chicken soup) couldn't hurt.

Rifle and shotgun.
 
Issued S&W 642 air weight on the ankle.

Depends what beat I'm working as to demographics. Usually suburban but sometimes rural
 
Current FT Peace Officer.
Medium Agency with high homicide rate for our State.
Issued Glock 22 and encouraged but not required to carry back up / off duty gun.
Recomended BUG Glock 27.
Also use Smith & Wesson J-Frame.
Back up / off-duty must be approved, purchased individually, & officer must qualify with it quarterly.
Carry in a pocket or ankle or body armour holster depending on weather.
I carry a back up weapon anytime I am on-duty.
In the past I have also used Colt Pony Pocket Lite & Walther PPK before going to Glock 27 & Smith & Wesson J-Frame .38 Spl
Used to carry Beretta 92FS backed by Walther & Carried 1911 backed by J-Frame in the past.
All our patrol cars have 14.5 select fire Colt M-4 rifles
I used to use Colt SMG 9mm as squad rifle.
In the past had an H&K MP 5 issued to me.
Started out career with 870 Pump as Squad long gun.
 
Many years ago I briefly carried a second gun but gave it up as impractical for me.... On duty I always had a shotgun handy as weapon #2 (and it remains my favorite if serious weapons might be needed). As I moved into the last half of a 22 year career I also made the hard decision that anything less than a duty weapon was a bad idea so I carried my duty weapon (hi cap 9mm compact or Sig 229) with me always (even in an ankle holster). It was great to get out of that line of work when I retired in 1995. Haven't carried a weapon even once since then.

It is a custom 9mm S&W 360J revolver. I carry it in my weak side cargo pocket.

Two is one, one is none. My choice, not the dept's.

Yes. My patrol rifle is a personally owned (like all of my other duty weapons) SIG 556 Classic hat I just bought a couple of months ago to replace an aging Bushmaster AR-15.

Why do citizens carry a BUG?

I'm one of the lucky few Californians with a CCW and I rarely carry a BUG, altough I always carry a knife.

I understand why LEOs carry BUGs, as their primary weapon is exposed. I just don't understand why private citizens who CCW feel the need. Am I overlooking something?
 
I'm curious as well on the civilian BUG. Carrying pre-LEO, off duty, and post-LEO I've never carried a second gun, but have had some people tell me I'm crazy not to.
 
S&W .38 special. Carried in a concealable holster in my outervest carrier. Large city. BUG's are private purchase only. I have a colt 6920 in patrol vehicle.

Do you have knife fighting training?

As to why some do, in case their primary has a malfunction that cannot be cleared quickly or in a certain situation that they cannot access their primary. Those are the basic reasons that I have heard.
 
I used to carry a BUG (Ruger SP101 3") in a reproduction victory model holster under my vest on the weak side.

I stopped carrying it when I switched to a new ballistic vest and for some reason it prints really bad with the new vest. We're going to be issued some J frame S&W's in the near future, so hopefully the smaller gun will be more concealable.
 
I had the pleasure to meet DblOKevin as I was (reluctantly) selling him my Kahr PM40. I asked him if it was for BUG duty and was happy as heck when he responded, "No, this is my issued BUG" while pulling up his pant leg. Glad to see that our local PD is equipping our LEOs well. Though I hated selling it, I'm comforted knowing the Kahr went to someone protecting and supporting my community. I was happy to find our local government supports him, at least firearm-wise.

Kevin- if you still want that leather OWB holster I forgot about, shoot me a P.M.. I'm moving (locally) and stuff is bound to start gettting lost soon.
 
current LEO. issued Glock 22. BUG is S&W 637 worn on holster inside of shirt on my vest or a KelTec PF-9 in the same spot. BUG is personally bought. also have an 870 in the car and we are now getting ARs as well.

small city in rural area with high crime rate and large drug problem.
 
Retired LEO, duty weapon .45 ACP caliber SIG-SAUER P220A, BUG varied
but most of the time it was a North American Arms 1-1/8" bbl .22 mag;
until the Glock 27's came along. The NAA "mini" was carried in the right
front pants pocket, and the G-27 in the pocket of BDU's. Neither, was
departmental required; and I never had to use the BUGS. My department
was not a "big city" outfit; but rather an upscaled city, adjacent to the
"Magic City" aka: Bombingham. Alabama.

Nowdays, I simply carry a 3" .45 caliber Kimber 1911; with a KEL-TEC
P3AT .380 as a BUG. :) ;)
 
Back in the day when I was working, I carried a BUG on me when I worked alone. Just comforting that it was there and available. You have to qualify with it. No dept. policy on them.
 
I carried a subcompact in a vest holster under my armpit some days and in a ankle holster others. The ankle holster is more comfortable, but the vest holster is deeper concealed, more secure and easier to access. The barrel got dirtier when carried on the ankle, but the ammo got more steamy and clouded when carried in the vest. My department approved BUG carry, but I had to qualify with it along with my primary duty gun.
 
Personally owned G26. Have to qualify with it anually. Carried in a vest holster. No dept policy other than guidelines for caliber. Medium sized city. Issued Colt M-16 and Remington 870.

My department doesnt openly recommend carrying a BUG, but they dont really restrict it either. I carry a BUG because of Murphy.
