Les Baer . . . Now I Understand

I'm the same way, I use to make fun of a buddy of mine saying I can buy 3 guns for what you paid for that. He would just smile and say u sure can. Now I know, got a Les Baer PII almost 2yrs ago. Getting ready to get another LB 1911 and one of his AR's from John @ proload.com. He's less then going through the factory and there's no wait.

Uh-oh,

My Monolith came with Wilson 47D mags. The only difference between the Wilson and the supplied Les Baer mag, is there is no lettering on the base pad of the mag. I have used a 47D for many, many years in my Kimber and it still works perfectly.

I only have 125 rounds through this Monolith with no problems so far. For my first range outing, 75 rounds were 200 LSWC's, 25 were 185 gn Rainers (with the truncated nose), and 25 rounds using a Montana Gold 185 JHP.

I also bench tested the Winchester Factory 230 JHP Personal Defense ammo. All have fed smoothly so far.

By the way, the first time I tried to open the slide, I thought the gun would mis-feed and possibly jam a lot. These Les Baers are friggen' tight, but it ran without a hitch.

Yeah got to love the Les Baer....

I picked a TRS here in the forums for $1350 a while back.... it is very nice. One of my favorite 1911s.

Whenever I read posts like yours I start thinking of which 3 or 4 of my guns I could sell and put the money towards a high-end 1911. I could never whittle my collection down to only one gun, but if I ever did seriously 'minimize' my collection, a high-end 1911 would definitely be one of the few left in the safe!
Congratulations and enjoy!

Are you sure? Baer mags look like Wilson's but they have holes instead of slots. The followers and base pads look the same but the Baer mags use a more brittle plastic. The base pad of a Wilson also has a tiny step at the front top of the basepad where it meets the mag body. The Baer mags do not. This is why some people have problems seating a 47D in a Baer.

Before I bought my TRS I must have spent three months reading everything I could find on all the semi-customs. It came down to a RRA or the Baer. The wait at the time was eight months for a RRA or pick up a TRS from Sporting Arms which they had on the shelf. For the money I don't think there is a better 1911 than Les Baer.

Anybody own both a Les Baer and an Ed Brown? I've eliminated Nighthawk and Wilson from the running, but I'm having a tough time choosing between these two.

Any comments would be appreciated! Congrats again to Schmeky!

One last comment. . . . this pistol is b_tch to take apart and put back together. I've never seen anything like this, it is so tightly fitted.

One word of advice in case you didn't know, when you go to field strip it do not try to turn the bushing with the slide in battery. Always pull the slide back a half an inch or so and it will make it much easier to turn. Also when I have mine apart I always work the bushing back and forth in the slide several times (with the barrel out). This will help smooth down any tooling marks and make it easier to take apart.

125 handloads
Congratulations, you just voided your warranty....Unless Les is different than most mfgr's....:( Anyway, Kudos on your purchase...I read one reviewer state you can get a hernia trying to lock back their slides, is that true?

I just got my .38 Super PII and it makes no mention of warranty or ammo or anything else, just a commitment of service to their customers. Good enough for me.

My PII opens and closes easily, no hernias, and it cycles my low recoil handloads like buttah', so it is not overly tight.

BTW schmeky, Congratulations, very nice.:)

Les does not guarantee you a warranty no matter what ammo you choose to break it in with...

He will fix any problems you have...but its up to him whether he does it on your dime or his.

Unless he saw something that made him believe it was due to overloaded ammo...it wouldn't matter what ammo he used.

It isn't that bad, but out of 6 (or 7?) 1911s that I currently own and probably a dozen more that have been through the safe, the Baer is the hardest to move the slide on.

Nope, not true. If you kaboom the gun then it would hold but unless it's ammo related, Les will fix it. I broke lower barrel lugs on one of my TRS's a few years back and all I was shooting was my reloads. I told Les that and it didn't bother him in the least. The barrel was out of time and he fixed it.
