The slotted handguard is supposed to allow faster cooling of the barrel since more of it is exposed to outside air.
If you have small fingers, I would watch out though.
Springfield is selling the slotted handguards in brown and black. I think Fred's also had them. The only problem with the slotted handguards is if you fire a lot real fast. You can see the heatwaves shimmering off the barrel when you aim the rifle. I don't have that problem because I usually shot 5 or 10 and then wait for the shooting session to end. That's usually enough for the rifle to cool down. I dunno why I bought it, I think I was bored and hey, it's sorta FALish, since we can't have those in CA.
Since one almost never sees slotted handguards on military-issue M14's these days.
I thought about one, but since I scoped mine, the barrel heat mirage would be a bit of a problem. Is kind of a neat touch, though, especially with the contrasting stainless steel barrel showing through.
Another problem with the slotted handgaurds is that they were found to be more brittle! Solid fiberglass (or even better, Fulton's new plastic ones) or walnut are the best, both in function and look.
Brrrrrr...........man that looks cold (but here in Kali, 60degress and you put on long johns). Good thing ya got gloves on otherwise when you change mags you could end up with the mag stuck to your bare hands!!
