No one noticed .357 Mag missing either? I know there are lever gun fans here! I’ll be 45 about this time next month, I know what a Segway is, know Dean Kamen invented it (and is still alive), don’t believe every “gun collection” must include 4 Glocks and 3 ARs, but do believe those disposable modulars will end real gun collecting for most of our younger shooters.

I only own a few on that list for practical reasons, the biggest of which is time. PTA, orchestra, band, and choral concerts, coaching multiple sports at once, Cub, Girl, and Boy Scout troop meetings, board meetings, cooking, cleaning, oh, and making a living all mean that sometimes gathering more hardware to gather dust will have to wait till I actually am an old geezer.

Comparing rounds fired per caliber to show favoritism to the AR crowd is like comparing the Honda Civic to an AMG and declaring nobody really likes Mercedes. Get behind the wheel of both and tell me again what point volume proves. Hey guys, we got called geezers! Wait till our friends on AOL hear that.

kinda surprised i only had one caliber on that list.

but i have a lot of 223 :)

my others are 300NM, 6BR, 6.5x47L, 260AI, 260rem, 300blk

i would have guessed the 300blk would be at least as popular as the 6.5cm

Use and popularity are not always synonymous, if we are talking about killing things, one shot per death is what you would be going for any way.

I shoot some rounds a lot, sometimes just into dirt to see if a gun will run. The good ones, I might check a time or two a year to confirm they are still doing what they have done for decades.

Some of the guns I have are because I think the gun is interesting and the caliber came along for the ride. For example I'm not really a 223 fan boy, but when everyone I know is giving me free brass and 22 caliber bullets cost half as much as most everything else, it just makes sense to keep a couple around. If I could load or buy 25-06 or 300 blk or even 22 hornet for the same cost I wouldn't have one. Same goes for a 22lr vs a 22 mag. Sure I would rather shoot 22 mag but it's 5 times the cost and they don't make a browning buckmark 22 mag.

Lots of surprises in here. I'm very surprised how many people have 45-70's (I have one myself) and very surprised how many people had 25-06's. I would have thought 30-06 would have a larger lead over 308. I also thought 243, 270 and 338 would be much higher than they are.

Take off the x54R and the .450bush, both of which I no longer own or load, and you'd have less than half of my current list of rifle cartridges represented.

No doubt the "Point Two-Two Three" as the British would call it, is the most popular. The AR series pattern of weapons system platform is mucho popularo. Good stopper, low kick, cheap shells, good range and accuracy. Very cool.

Exactly! 5.56/.223 is running away with the poll but it might not look the same if a vote was taken on which we shoot the most. I have three 5.56/.223 rifles but I shoot 300 Blackout way more than 5.56mm because it's quieter when suppressed. Heck, I shoot my .375 H&H way more than my 5.56/.223 rifles.
I'm pretty sure 5.56 is remarkably high volume though - just thinking about what the mix in range brass is. Obviously more small stuff gets left behind and more big stuff reloaded, but still it's mostly .223/5.56.

I don't know anybody going to the range and shooting 300 rounds of 30-06, but I've sure seen lots of people shooting that much or more 223.

I’ve also never seen anyone at the range with a 10/22 that fired fewer rounds per hour than me with a turn bolt .22 and 5-round magazines. We used to call them folks ammo wasters as some never even set up targets.

I still say volume measurement won’t get you actual mass appeal; maybe wallet to cheap thrill ratio or perceived value. Remember during the shortage, all those guys refusing to pay $10 for 50 rounds of Eley because .223 PMC was $6.99/20 and a bigger bang for the buck? Pepperidge Farms does (and this geezer does too).

Interesting numbers though with a pretty fair cartridge inclusion. I do get your point though, Someguy, but man that AMG was a hoot!

Ha! Not quite Sonny. I’m only 35. My top 5 hunting rifles.... 44mag, 444, 45-70, 30-06, .223 (non AR). The “geezers” of today will be the “wise men” of tomorrow.

Well in some cases, the "wise a$$'s" of yesterday somehow managed to survive to become the geezers of today... ;)
Not surprised to see so many 5.56/223 in the totals. I am beginning to understand why from shooting that newly acquired varmint rifle of mine.

I was just addressing the comments about ammo sales. I prefer my shooting to be in a more deliberate manor myself. However I havn't failed to notice that most gun shops have transitioned from carrying 3 or 4 AR's, to half the store being AR15's, and the other half all other types of rifles. When I go to the local fleet store and stand in the ammo isle for 20 minutes, there is a steady stream of 20-40 year olds grabbing 223/556 off the shelves and nobody even looking at the high power rifle cartridges, unless its November of course. Same thing on the occasional trip to public ranges, if someone is shooting a rifle, good bet its an AR15. I lament it as much as the next guy but the current generation of shooters have picked AR15's and glocks and XD's as there shooting devices of choice. For a very large number of new young shooters it is the first centerfire rifle they own and for many non hunters it will be the only. I sincerely hope the next generation comes back around to shiny blue and walnut again though.

Oh and ditch the merk and get a bimmer :D

Considering the AR is the most common rifle in America, I wouldn't be surprised if 5.56 is a winner. So we will see.
